Lemon is a new online tool, mainly targeted at consumer users, that allows you to keep receipts digitised and organised for better financial recordkeeping.

If, like me, your wallet is overflowing with pieces of paper, this free- to-download smartphone app could help you keep on track, allowing you to access all of your receipts in one place at your fingertips.

It’s a pretty straightforward process to get going once you’ve downloaded the app and created a new Lemon account.

Scan receipts with your smartphone camera by lining up the paper edges with the on-screen box and snap the photo; add a label if you want to organise your data in a particular way, and that’s it.

The time the app takes to collect the data after taking the image is anywhere from a couple of minutes up to 25 minutes, depending on the receipt.

Alternatively, you can email an online receipt to your lemon.com email address and it’ll send to your account for safe keeping. You can also manually enter expenses (if you happen to have paid for a taxi and not picked up a receipt, for example),

You can then call up the summary on your phone or your own dashboard on Lemon’s website, and try to make sense of your receipts and spending habits.

If you want to be really organised, you can also use the data to create a budget and tracking reports on a monthly or weekly basis for accounting/expenses purposes.

For BlackBerry, Android, Windows Phone and iPhone. The app can be downloaded here.

Strengths:

  • Lemon gives you the tools to collect all your receipts in one place
  • Allows you to analyse the data in a simple dashboard

Weaknesses

  • In some instances it has taken a number of days to process some of my scanned receipts
  • I’ve had to make adjustments to categories - when the retailer isn’t recognised - as it reverts to a ‘general category’ default, if not recognised

Rating: 4*/5*

Receipt Bank

Hi,

Receipt Bank offers a similar service in the UK. Crucially Receipt Bank integrates with the leading online bookkeeping packages (FreeAgent, KashFlow, Xero, etc) so that data can be sent directly to them. It also shares the receipt and invoice data with the user's bookkeeper or accountant.

More information about the Receipt Bank service is available at www.receipt-bank.com.

(Disclosure - I work for Receipt Bank)
