The British Applications of Software Developers Association (BASDA) has recently launched an Accountants in Practice interest group

The aim of the forum is to present a “common agenda” between software developers and accountants when engaging with government bodies on policy and legislation issues.

BASDA is frequently asked to discuss plans that may affect the industry at an early stage. Most recently, it met with the Revenue last week to discuss the proposed phasing out of the annual tax return.

The Accountants in Practice interest group was also present at the meeting and is chaired by TaxCalc’s Steve Checkley. He says the aim of the group once established, will be to get accountants represented through it via their professional accountancy bodies.

He told the ICPA publication Accounting Today: "BASDA has always had working parties on key matters and if we can include representation with the accountancy bodies, we will surely have quite some collective influence.”

In addition to providing a united view between software developers and practitioners on certain issues, the interest group will also consider issues facing accountants in relation to software used in their practices.

It will also look into initiatives proposed by, for example, Companies House and the Financial Reporting Council – whatever is likely to affect practitioners.

Checkley added that the group will be able to use its influence to develop a schedule with government bodies so that practitioners do not end up being overwhelmed by lots of change in one go.

Does anyone

know the reason why the annual tax return needs to be phased out. After all it is the hub of SA. If SA is no longer needed we have to assume that HMRC will tell the tax payer what is due and go from there.

I certainly will need some sort of return so that I have all information in one place to enable me to advise client. I really don't want to have to go on to digital doodah all the time.

I really can't see how this is going to work smoothly. Sure IT people can do wonders but if the framework is wrong then we will all be up a gumtree.

they want to remove the tax return so that people, in time, will end up paying tax right away and not 9 months later.

That's ludicrous

So you make a profit in months 1+2 pay tax on that in month 3 then make a loss in month 4, claim that back. Monthly tax payments have never been a problem. A lot of my clients would prefer to pay on a monthly basis. In fact that is what CIS is. Can you imagine putting all business on CIS basis?
