Many people open advent calendars this time of year to chart the countdown to Christmas morning. But self assessment’s looming tax return deadline has prompted some accountants to search for an alternative countdown.

Sunday 31st January (Tax return deadline) is etched in the minds of accountants. However, some clients let the day slide as they become distracted by December’s festivities.

Accountant Stuart Jones searched online for some gizmo to track the days left until self -assessment deadline. He hoped a countdown clock would give a sense of urgency to clients dragging their heels. After a Google search, Jones stumbled upon the days.to website which counts down to events, such as national holidays, to the ticking second.

Jones embedded the clock on to his website. He hoped the clock’s presence would act as a gentle nudge to clients about the upcoming deadline. However, when Jones promoted the website on social media he was surprised to learn that the website was concocted by one of his clients.

“He tweeted the page to his followers,” Dave Griffiths, days.to creator said, “which I saw and very unusually recognized his name.  My day job is as a freelance software developer and, by strange coincidence, my accounts are done by 3CA/Stuart - but he didn't know of this side project of mine.”

Amused, Griffiths reached out to his accountant after noticing the coincidence with an idea.

“I suggested I'd make the content of the page a bit more specific to the tax deadline,” Griffiths said.

AccountingWEB believes this self assessment countdown clock is a great idea. Jones agreed: “My next task is to make my "slower" clients add it to their computers as a screen saver!”

We have embedded the clock as motivation to remind you of the impending deadline.
