A former Microsoft employee has received a custodial sentence after being found guilty of embezzling nearly $500,000 from the Redmond corporation by a US District Court judge in Seattle.

The man, Robert D. Curry, was director of business development for Microsoft's Strategic Partnerships Team in the Online Audience Business Group before he was fired by the corporation in January once allegations came to light.

According to Federal prosecutors Curry had created a shell company – Blu Games – through which he falsified invoices.

A letter to the court, written by Curry and quoted by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, revealed he “cannot definitively say why I did what I did,” and that “for the past nine months I have been asking myself why I was so self-destructive and irrational.”

Curry’s letter continued: “I knew I would get caught, and in many ways did not even try to cover up what I had done. Rather than face the stress directly, I took a path that would sabotage my future and tarnish my past achievements.”

Curry’s conviction is the second in the last month involving a former Microsoft employee. At the start of September, Randal Ray Seal was found guilty of fraud against the corporation and sentenced to serve two years behind bars.
