Former PKF partner Howard Hill pleaded guilty last week at Inner London crown court to unlawfully obtaining personal data about West Ham executives involved in the bitter struggle to win the tenancy of the Olympic Stadium in east London.

Hill will be sentenced along with Richard Forrest and Lee Stewart on 20 December. Charges for fraud by misrepresentation against the three were not heard, but remain on file.

The criminal case was brought after evidence came to light in a related civil case that PKF had received copies of West Ham vice chairman Karren Brady’s mobile phone records.

Brady, who has become a national figure from her appearances as Lord Sugar's assistant on BBC TV's 'The Apprentice' claimed that the phone records were used by the Sunday Times in a June 2011 article examining the struggle between West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur to win the rights to play at the refurbished Olympic Stadium.

Spurs retained PKF in March 2011 to carry out due diligence work on its bid for the stadium tenancy, but as the struggle became increasingly intense Olympic Park Legacy Company and West Ham executives complained they had been put under surveillance by Tottenham.

Hill worked as an investigator for PKF and revealed in court in November 2011 that he had received the documents, but had “no idea” who sent them. He then passed the information to The Sunday Times.

Both Spurs and PKF insisted that were unaware of Hill’s activities and he resigned from the firm in December 2011. Since then, PKF has also merged with BDO.
