We've been trying for two
We've been trying for two weeks to get through to Coleraine but their 'phones are constantly busy. Letter arrived from them 21st December and they wanted us to contact them (by 'phone) by 28th December.
Bleeters
The general standard of record keeping IS appalling AND does need improvement.
Fines have been threatened for years, but no one has ever seen one........
Will these visits work?....I don't think so....Only the innocent will worry about them and the guilty know they have taken more in unpaid tax than a paultry £3000 or the figure a poor investigation eventually comes up with. Do HMRC even have the skills to make this assessment?..most of the time they do not have a clue about accounts or double entry bookkeeping.....You just know you are going to have to spend half the time explaining the basics to the officer concerned.
Where should HMRC start? If they were really interested in tax evasion in small companies?.....with non compliant accounts......If the accounts are rubbish then the tax probably is as well. Simples.
50,000 checks might nearly be a weeks work and would yield millions.
The trouble with the profession bleeting about about everything is that we are not taken seriously when real issues do arise......

Not a Limited Number
Abbey Tax report today that the Coleraine office that make the appointments consider it to be business as usual and have a head office team visiting on Friday to check progress towards their targets - more misinformation from HMRC it would appear.
It might be easier for them to make appointments if they actually answered the phone!
