The ICAEW has launched a Business Advice Service (BAS) for small businesses in the South West as part of a national campaign to boost its advisory profile in the business market.

Over 200 ICAEW firms located in the South West region will be on hand to provide free advice to small and medium-sized businesses on a variety of issues, with no future partnership obligations. The initiative will be backed with an online business resource centre, similar to the institute's Practice Resource pages.

The scheme will fill the gap left by the closing of physical Business Link offices, but the BAS website will complement with BusinessLink.gov.uk, which is now the official source for government business advice and tax guidance.

ICAEW Chartered Accountants will be offering face-to-face consultations for small businesses and helping them to drive growth, while online services such as BusinessLink will continue to play an important role.

Robin Feith, ICAEW executive director, said: “Start-ups or growing small businesses need the best advice to succeed at a time of fragile recovery and limits on public spending. There is a clear need for expert business advice which helps SMEs and start-up businesses become engines of growth.”

At the launch in Bristol on 29 September, lord mayor Geoff Gollop welcomed BAS: “Small firms are the bedrock of the UK economy but some also need financial management support. This service is an example of how businesses can work together and will hopefully lead to local economic growth and potential job creation,” he said.

The regional scheme forms part of the ICAEW's national business advice service
