The ICAEW’s Corporate Finance Faculty has appointed Giles Derry, a partner at private equity firm Dunedin, as its chairman.

The appointment marks the first time someone from the private equity sector has become a chair for the Institute.

Commenting on his appointment, Derry said: “As the representative body of many professionals involved in corporate finance, the faculty can add significant value to initiatives for business and economic growth. I’m keen to make sure we’re looking at ways to move equity funding up the growth agenda in the UK and internationally – including project finance, private equity, growth capital, venture capital, business angels and start-ups.”

“I’m also keen that the faculty continues to broaden its membership of companies, investors and advisers to include other specialist areas of knowledge and consultancy. The extent to which we’re able to provide guidance across all levels of finance in business is a very good thing,” he added.

Derry joined Dunedin in 2005, having previously worked at Sand Aire Private Equity, and has national responsibility for origination activity across both the direct and intermediary channels.

He has led successful equity investments in a wide range of innovative, growing businesses, in sectors such as business services, industrial and financial services.

David Petrie, head of Corporate Finance at ICAEW, said: “As our first faculty chairman from private equity, Giles represents the wide network of the Corporate Finance Faculty, which includes many principals, advisers and bankers. The faculty has an important role in developing effective policy with government, regulators and other professional bodies. Giles brings direct, practical experience of equity investing in many growing companies.”
