Portable storage and digital encryption specialist iStorage has launched datashur – a new product the company claims is the ‘world’s most secure, robust and affordable encrypted USB flash drive’.

The new datashur protects against hackers and keyloggers with a range of innovative features, including hardware encryption and a PIN code alphanumeric keypad.

It combines ‘military grade’ AES 256-bit hardware encryption using a SHA-256 hashing cryptographic algorithm, an alphanumeric button-based keypad to input a 7-15 digit PIN code plus tamper resistant circuitry.

The product is housed in a slim aluminium casing to protect from water and dust, and delivers a level of protection unseen before in a USB stick.

Here are some of the key features:

  • Alphanumeric keypad - onboard keypad prevents hardware and software keylogging
  • 7-15 digit PIN code access – up-to a 15 digit memorable number or word
  • Military grade protection - AES 256-bit hardware encryption protects data in real time
  • Tamper resistant – epoxy resin destroys circuit board components if tampered with
  • Robust design - sealed extruded aluminium casing protects from dust and water
  • Auto-lock – datashur will auto lock on loss of power or ejection to prevent access

John Michael, managing director of iStorage, said: “As more stories hit the headlines of lost or stolen unencrypted flash drives containing sensitive personal and corporate data, individuals and organisations alike must move more swiftly and take greater responsibility to secure their data.

“datashur’s hardware encryption, onboard keypad and 7-15 alphanumeric PIN will safeguard against hacking & keylogger attacks. Combine this with its slimline, robust aluminium design and you have a USB stick at a price affordable for anyone who cares about securing their data.”

datashur can be configured with independent User and Admin PINs,  making it ideal for corporate and government use. It also includes a drive reset feature which clears all PINs and data, and creates a new randomly generated encryption key to enable the drive to be reset and reused.

It is available in three capacities of 4GB, 8GB and 16GB at £39, £59 and £79 (ex. VAT) respectively. The device is fully compatible with Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac computers and Linux, and together with Symbian and Android powered tablets and smartphones.

Secure USB Stick

I can't believe that it's taken so long for something like this to hit the market!  An excellent idea and I'm sure that gov depts up and down the country will be first in the queue (or is that wishful thinking?)

Definately wishful thinking but they will first create a thinktank group to discuss the pro's and con's of buying them at a cost that far outways the ACTUAL cost of buying them in the first place! Or am i just cynical.......

Been available for yonks

Secure encrypted flash drives have been available for a long time ... I've been using 8Gb and 4Gb Integral CryptoDrives for the last couple of years or so. Easy to use, great peace of mind, and not expensive. Also use encrypted portable 500 Gb hard drives (iStorage DiskGenie)... these have external keypad for entering your password, are extremely fast (fasted portable drives I've ever met using USB2), and again, not expensive. And, using a Mac, the section of the hard drive that holds all your files can be locked down using the inbuilt FileVault, which is practically unnoticeable when in use, but does mean that your vulnerable data is encrypted all the time on the fly.

Me, paranoid? Never!

Not so Unique

This product is basically a copy of a product called LOK-IT Secure Flash Drive. LOK-IT invented the PIN PAD protected Secure USB Drive.

The LOK-IT, having been on the market for over 2 years is also FIPS 140-2 Level 3 Certified - the highest and most secure certification that a flash drive can get. If you want the real thing, with proper certification (not just manufacturer claims) then I suggest you get a LOK-IT Secure Flash Drive.
