Research In Motion (RIM) has launched a free online service for small businesses, giving them some measure of protection on lost or stolen company BlackBerry smartphones.

The Canadian company behind the devices have designed the online BlackBerry Management Center for businesses using up to 100 BlackBerrys, and which utilise web-based email services (such as Hotmail or Gmail) or email services provided by their Internet Service Provider.

The online platform allows small business users the ability to remotely lock and wipe a lost or stolen BlackBerry device, reset a password, and wirelessly back up data on the smartphones on daily, weekly, or monthly basis. The functionality is similar to some of the options open to users of RIM’s BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

“We are pleased to introduce RIM’s latest Cloud service designed specifically for small businesses,” said Alan Panezic, vice president, Enterprise Product Management at Research In Motion. “BlackBerry Management Center is a free service and an effective way to manage and support employees’ BlackBerry smartphones in the cloud.”

The launch of the BlackBerry Management Center comes in the same month as RIM is set to deliver five new models in the BlackBerry range, each powered by the company’s new BlackBerry 7 operating system.
