A Shropshire chartered accountant is expanding its cloud accounting and bookkeeping system to meet rising demand.

The iCan application is the brainchild of Nigel Hinton, managing direcor of Andrews Orme & Hinton, who said it offers an alternative to the global businesses that dominate the accounting software market.

Designed for accountancy practices, the program came to life four years ago with help from Mark Brawn of White Whale Software.

Hinton says he got cloud accounting “instantly” when he was introduced to it four years ago, and saw the potential of the technology for accountancy practices.

“I got a vision of a future where the data entry and communication with clients would be encrypted data through the cloud.

“I knew that with my accounting practice knowledge and Brawn’s cloud software skills, we could make something worthwhile,” Hinton said.

The iCan system went live in November 2010 and continued to attract users during an extensive trial and development period. Last year, iCan began earning subscription revenue.

Hinton plans to expand iCan's user base in the next few months with a mobile app and a new facility to submit VAT returns directly to HMRC.

Lining up against competitors such as Sage, Intuit, IRIS and Xero in the cloud accounting market, Hinton said iCan can move more quickly as it doesn't have a large cumbersome management structure or large overheads.

The firm’s philosophy is to work with accounting practices and their clients and to lessen the pain by playing down “accounting jargon” within the program, Hinton said.

Modules within the software include:

  • VAT returns
  • Purchase order referencing
  • Balance sheet
  • Income and expenditure
  • Invoicing/billing/customer
  • Money in/out
  • Simple interface
