One in four employers in finance and accounting offer apprenticeships and about half believe they provide faster career progression than a degree, a new survey reveals.

Benefits for apprentices include learning skills while being paid and learning from senior people in the profession, according to a survey of 1,000 decision-makers in business by Kaplan, which provides accountancy training.

Cassandra MacDonald, head of accountancy and tax apprenticeships at Kaplan, said: "In the accountancy sector, accountancy and tax apprenticeships provide apprentices with skills directly related to their job role, but also professional bodies AAT, ATT, CIMA, and ICAEW accredit apprenticeships with a qualification that is recognised worldwide."

In 2013, the coalition government published plans to improve apprenticeship schemes.
