George Osborne will deliver his autumn statement on Wednesday, 3 December 2014.

The chancellor made the announcement during Treasury questions in the House of Commons today.

The autumn statement provides an update on the government's plans for the economy, based on the forecasts provided by the Office for Budget Responsibility.

HM Treasury has invited “businesses, charities and members of the public” to say what they would like to see in the autumn statement. Submissions should be made by 17 October, it said, to allow time for full consideration in advance of the announcement.

Draft clauses for Finance Bill 2015 are expected to be published for consultation shortly after the autumn statement. There are currently more than 30 live tax-related consultations.

Measures already earmarked for Finance Bill 2015 include:

  • controversial new HMRC powers for direct recovery of tax and tax credit debts from bank and building society accounts, on which consultation closed in July; and
  • four measures to simplify the administration of employee expenses and benefits, on which consultation closes on 9 September.
