Irish accountants to advise mortgage-holders for free

The Irish government is setting up a panel of more than 2,000 accountants to give free advice on long-term restructuring to distressed mortgage borrowers in Ireland.

The measure was announced by the minister for social protection Joan Burton, who was among the first women to become chartered accountants in Ireland and has previously worked at PwC.

The 2,000-strong panel will include members from Ireland’s main accountancy institutes.

Lenders will pay €250 (£212) for borrowers to spend with a profession who can offer them independent advice.

An excellent idea but this would not work in the UK due to compliance and money laundering issues.
