EY picks eBay exec as innovation chief

23 July - EY has appointed Jeff Wong to lead its newly formed global innovation team. The global team will provide visibility needed to forecast the technologies and trends on the horizon.

Wong joins EY from eBay, where he led the organization's Business Incubation Group. He began his career with the Boston Consulting Group and worked at JAFCO America Ventures, in addition to J.P. Morgan Partners. Wong spent the last 10 years at eBay, where he was on the Marketplaces Strategy team.

“To be successful, organizations must integrate innovation into their everyday strategies. The forces of change must be embraced and be seen as opportunities. EY knows and understands this and the role that innovation plays across all phases of a business,” Wong said.

Director appointed for Rothmans Accountants’ insolvency arm

22 July – James Stares has been appointed to Rothmans Recovery Limited, the new insolvency arm of Rothmans Chartered Accountants.

Stares has more than 15 years’ experience in advising companies and other key stakeholders on business, management and financial risk. James previously managed the business recovery and restructuring teams at both PwC and Grant Thornton in the Solent region.

Stares will be based in the firm’s Salisbury office, with responsibility to service client needs across the Southern and Solent regions.

RDP Newmans expands its team

21 July - RDP Newmans have recruited nine new members of staff to their team.

Daniel Liu, Ian Chan, Osama Ayub, Vishal Dhowtall, Rachana Sharma, Saad Ahsan, Tomasina Cohen and Prash Sivasanmugamoorthy have joined the firm, which has offices in Harrow, London, and Southend.

Mahesh Sachdev, Partner at RDP Newmans, said: “As a firm we are always looking to strengthen our services and the addition of these new members will allow us to extend our tax and accountancy offerings to more clients,” said Mahesh Sachdev, Partner at RDP Newmans.

Deloitte Newcastle announces new senior office partner

13 July - Stephen Hall has taken over as the office senior partner at Deloitte’s Newcastle office, following Paul Feechan’s decision to retire.  

Hall has been with Deloitte for 22 years and a partner since 2008. Feechan retired after 30 years with the firm, including 20 years as a partner.

“In 2014 Paul led the development of Deloitte’s accounting and audit Centre of Excellence, which has so far created over 50 jobs and is providing a new pathway into the accountancy profession for people in the North East,” said Hall. “I’m looking forward to continuing his work in spreading the word about just how much Deloitte has to offer both to clients and as an employer”

MHA MacIntyre merges with MHA Bloomer Heaven

10 July – MHA MacIntyre Hudson has acquired Birmingham based firm BHA Bloomer Heaven.

Although Bloomer Heaven will remain in its current offices, they will be renamed MHA MacIntyre Hudson. Rakesh Shaunak, MHA MacIntyre chairman, said, “The combination of MHA Bloomer Heaven’s reputation, presence and potential in the West Midlands, coupled with our national and international experience, expertise and resource will allow us to truly expand both firms’ services into the region.”

New chairman for CCAB

9 July - Tony Nicholl has been appointed the chairman of CCAB

Nicholl is the president of Chartered Accountants Ireland and managing partner of GMcG Chartered Accountants. The group will focus on helping government and police tackle money laundering and work with members as the UK votes on its membership of the European Union next year.

"CCAB will also direct considerable effort into tackling the problem of money laundering by encouraging a joined-up approach between policy makers, business and other authorities such as the police," said Nicholl

Duncan & Toplis promotes three accountants

8 July - Antony Voakes and Rachel Barrett have both taken up the role of Associate Director at the Duncan & Toplis Lincoln office, while Sarah Clyde at Boston has been promoted to Director.

Voakes joined Duncan & Toplis in 2013 looking for a new challenge having been a director at an independent practice. He trained at Top 10 and Big 4 accounting firms where he qualified as a Chartered Tax Adviser and Taxation Technician. Barrett has worked in an accountancy practice role for 25 years and joined Duncan & Toplis in 2007. Clyde joined the firm in 1999 as a newly qualified Chartered Certified Accountant and was promoted to Manager. 

“Our tax offering is second to none in the region and the firm is providing leading tax advice across the whole of the East Midlands for a large and varied client base,” said Voakes.

Liverpool firm announces merger

8 July - Liverpool accountants and business advisors Mitchell Charlesworth is merging with Kemp & Co accountants.

Kemp & Co has been based in Liverpool for more than 50 years specialising in supporting SME businesses. Partners Michael Todd and Malcolm Grant together with staff will now relocate to Mitchell Charlesworth’s Temple Street office.

Mitchell Charlesworth managing partner Paul Wainwright said: “The merger represents another step in the firm’s development towards being the leading SME advisor in Liverpool. The deal will add more resource to our operations and provide more services to their clients. It was clear from the outset that we both have a desire to support SMEs and have similar partner led approaches when working with clients.”

EY appoints managing partner for talent

6 July - Maggie Stilwell has been appointed EY’s new managing partner for talent.

Stilwell has been a partner in the fraud and dispute services (FIDS) practice since 1996, and has more than 19 years’ experience, particularly focusing on contract disputes. Her new role will see her continuing to develop EY’s leading people culture, to ensure the firm is seen as an employer of choice by both existing and new recruits.

“We aim to challenge some of the traditional practices associated with working in professional services, and take a lead on modernising the workplace to better reflect the world in which we live,” said Stilwell. “Over the last three years we’ve introduced flexible working, encouraging our people at every level of the organisation to decide how, when and where they work to suit their clients, their teams, the business and themselves”.

Midlands accountants expands its team

6 July - Baldwins Accountants has recruited Praveen Gupta as a tax partner from BDO in Birmingham, and he will be dividing his time between visiting clients in Birmingham, Coventry and Walsall.

Gupta started his career at a chartered accountancy firm in Coventry before moving to London and Birmingham.

“We are one of the largest independent accountancy businesses regionally and have the expertise to match larger national firms,” said Gupta. “I have significant experience in dealing with entrepreneurial businesses and understanding both corporate and shareholder issues, this allows me to provide my clients with the all-round advice that they need focusing on both their commercial objectives and cash tax savings.”

Graduate rises to partner for Price Bailey Guernsey

6 July - Chartered accountant and business adviser Price Bailey has promoted Kirsty Warner, who joined the firm as a graduate in 2003, to partner at its Guernsey office.

Warner qualified with Price Bailey in 2006. Having spent time in different departments she moved to Guernsey in July 2013 to lead the Guernsey general practice team.

“Guernsey continues to add value to the Group's offering with regular referrals to other departments and teams,” said Price Bailey MD, Martin Clapson. “We also win work on the mainland because we are seen as a progressive firm with an international offering. With the move last November to new offices and with Kirsty’s promotion to partnership we expect Guernsey to be even more successful over the coming years.”

FRC board appointments

2 July - Ray King and John Coomber have been appointed to the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) board with effect from 23 July 2015.

King is a non-executive director and chairs the Audit & Risk Committees at Saga, and throughout his career has held a number of senior finance positions. He qualified as a chartered accountant with Price Waterhouse & Co. Coomber retired recently as chief executive officer of Pension Insurance Corporation.

Ray King also becomes a member of the board’s Codes and Standards Committee and chair of the Audit & Assurance Council from the same date. John Coomber becomes a member of the board’s Codes and Standards Committee.

FRC chairman Sir Win Bischoff said, “I am delighted to welcome Ray King and John Coomber to the FRC Board. Ray’s wide knowledge of corporate reporting within a number of large organisations, as well as listed entities outside the FTSE 100 and FTSE 350 and his experience as a Board member on Audit Committees will lend highly valuable insights to the FRC’s work on corporate governance and audit regulation. John’s significant international experience and actuarial background will contribute to the FRC’s strategy in these areas.”
