A round-up of significant executive moves, announcements and other developments from the world of practice during November 2012.

BDO ramps up financial services team

22 Nov - Accountancy and business advisory firm BDO has announced a number of new appointments within its financial services team based in London.

David Morrey has joined as a partner, Zulfi Unar has joined as a senior manager and Liam Martinez has joined as a manager, which all follow that of Paul Crean who joined as a director earlier this year.

Neil Fung-On, partner and head of financial services audit at BDO, said:

By growing the team we aim to exceed the ever increasing requirements and challenges of financial services companies in the face of incoming financial regulation including, AIFMD, RDR, CRD IV and FATCA as well as the imminent introduction of the two new regulators, the FCA and PRA.

Morrey previously held the role of chief internal auditor and then head of risk and compliance for the global investment management business at Aviva group.

Most recently, he led the development of the financial services risk advisory and internal audit practice at Kingston Smith Consulting.

Unar joins from the Financial Services Authority (FSA) and Martinez joins from Kinetic Partners.

Rawlinsons takes on two new partners

22 Nov - Peterborough accountancy firm Rawlinsons will start the New Year with the appointment of two new partners.

Julie Bloodworth and Tracey Richardson, both associates of the Lincoln Road based-firm since 2008, will take up their new roles from 1 January.

Richardson joined Rawlinsons in 1998 and qualified as a chartered accountant in 2001. She now manages the firm’s audit team and has a broad range of experience in accounts preparation and audit for companies, charities and pension schemes. She also specialises in work for the legal profession and Academies.

Bloodworth qualified as a chartered accountant in 1998 and provides accountancy and tax services to partnerships, companies and individuals, including personal and corporate tax planning.

She also advises on estate planning, acts as a trustee and supports estate executors and is a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners.

Senior partner Chris Collier said: “Tracey and Julie have proved their value to the business over a number of years and their appointment as partners strengthens the management team of the firm. We are excited to see what they can add to the practice, and our clients, in their new roles.”

Henley branch of Taylorcocks upsizes 

18 Nov - The branch has expanded from three to nine staff, with a turnover increase of 400% in two years. 

They have also recently moved to bigger premises and taken on 60 new clients. 

It's the ninth outlet that Taylorcocks has opened in the UK. The company employs 100 people nationwide. 

"I think Henley has weathered the recession far better than most other towns and it's just a great place to do business," office partner Ian Hewitt said. 

"We tend to focus more on entrepreneurs and high net worth individuals and there have always been a lot of them in the Henley area."

Menzies appoints new business recovery director 

13 Nov - The firm appointed Robert Pick as a director in their recovery and insolvency area. 

Pick worked at smaller firm Moorfields and then Grant Thornton before taking his Menzies role. 

He has built a specialism in helping rescue distressed care homes and has spent the last ten years managing a home on behalf of an overseas investor. 

Managing partner at Menzies Simon Underwood said: "Robert has developed a wealth of experience that makes him a perfect fit to strengthen the team's existing expertise in the small business and OMB sectors."

BDO appoints head of business restructuring team

6 Nov -The firm appointed former London partner Danny Dartnaill to lead the team in Reading and surrounding areas. 

Dartnaill's specialities include insolvency, business restructuring and turnaround work. He was 12 years' experience and spent the last 9 years working with BDO at their London office. 

He said: "BDO has a fantastic, well-established and respected team of restructuring professionals in Reading and I’m excited about the opportunity of leading the team here. Reading and the surrounding area is a strong market in its own right, very distinct from London, with its own network of advisors and professionals”

65 Audit Commission staff join Grant Thornton

6 Nov - The move makes Grant Thornton the largest provider of assurance and advisory services to public sector bodies in the South West. 

The new staff have joined Grant Thornton's public sector assurance practice in the South West, South East, London, North West, West Midlands and Scotland. 

South West staff will be based from Truro to Dorchester and join the existing team of 20 public sector assurance specialists. 

Grant Thornton partner and head of public sector assurance team in the South West John Golding said: "Our significantly enlarged team means we now have the strength and breadth of expertise to provide assurance to the public and constructive advice to clients right across the public sector."

New position at Albert Goodman

5 NovAlbert Goodman has appointed a new insolvency and restructuring manager. 

Anthony Ford is taking over from Ian Walton, who recently retired after 26 years from the Dorset accountancy firm. 

He will take on the role of insolvency and restructuring manager and will be based in Weymouth. Ford has 14 years' experience, joining from RSM Tenon. He has also worked for KPMG and PwC. 

He said: I am really pleased to join Albert Goodman. I am enjoying getting out and about, meeting new and existing introducers of clients in general difficulty. I am particularly keen to develop the restructuring side of the insolvency discipline."

New tax partner at Littlejohn 

1 Nov - Ross Welland, owner-managed business and tax specialist, has joined the firm as tax partner. 

Welland has worked in tax for over 25 years, the last 10 as a tax partner most recently with Haines Watts, with much of his time spent working with owner-managed businesses. 

He has advised on profit extraction, retaining key employees through share schemes and property purchase among other areas and much of his work has an international dimension. 

Paul Hopper, Littlejohn’s managing partner said: “We are committed to growing our tax practice and providing specialist expertise to both our business and private clients. Ross brings a wealth of experience and an in-depth understanding of owner-managed businesses, particularly in the international context. We are delighted to have him on board.”

Former Ernst & Young director joins Throgmorton

1 Nov - Neil Oliver, former director with Ernst & Young has joined Throgmorton as tax director. 

He will be working with the management team to enhance the companies outsourced tax services 

Prior to joining the firm, he worked with Ernst & Young for 24 years where he advised in tax, audit and regulatory matters. He also headed up their Jersey office and is a former chairman of the Alternative Investment Management Association's tax committee. 

Oliver said: "The outsourcing industry has been growing exponentially over the past five years with more institutional investors demanding third party service providers and the need to cut costs is greater than ever. I have been impressed by with the way Throgmorton has approached this niche and hope I can aid them in their ambition for expansion in both its services and client base."

Mazars opens first office in north east

1 Nov - The international accountancy firm will open its first office in Durham. 

49 people previously employed by the Audit Commission, which is being shut down by the government. 

The Durham office, which will cover the north east and north Yorkshire, will open with 34 public sector audit clients on its books. 

Partner and head of public sector Gareth Davies, who previously worked with the Audit Commission, said: We will be building on the team's huge public sector experience to offer an exciting new choice to clients across the region."
