Shaw Gibbs appoints head of corporate finance

27 JanClifford Brown has been appointed as the director and head of corporate finance at Oxford based firm Shaw Gibbs.

Brown joins the firm with experience Harley-Davidson Europe and senior finance positions at Thomas Reuters. He takes over this position from Peter O’Connell, who is now the firm’s managing director.

Commenting about his appointment, Brown said: “I will be focusing efforts on building on and enhancing the corporate finance platform that Peter O’Connell has established to ensure that the services we offer are aligned with the needs of clients looking for support on corporate transactions.  It is a privilege for me to be welcomed to the Shaw Gibbs team at an exciting phase in the firm’s evolution and I look forward to my future with the company.”

BDO appoints three new partners

26 Jan - BDO has hired three new partners to its tax and audit teams.

Stephanie Wilson joins BDO from RSM, where she was former head of solutions for the south; David I’Anson arrives from leading Mazars audit service line for the south region; and Nicoletta Papademetris has been promoted to partner BDO’s tax team.

Simon Michaels, managing partner at BDO LLP, said: “We continue to invest in our teams’ expertise and are delighted to welcome Stephanie and David, and congratulate Nicoletta on her promotion. Their expertise in advising the mid-market, private equity-backed companies and financial services will further strengthen our offering to clients.”

KPMG Nottingham welcomes three new starters

26 JanKPMG offices in Nottingham have recruited three assistant managers.

Nick Jack, Ed Rozwadowski and Nick Harrold have joined to deliver audit services across the East Midlands.

Ian Borley, East Midlands senior partner at the advisory firm, said: “"We are continuing to grow our business within the East Midlands, and this round of recruitment is testament to our plans for further expansion into the market. We expect to welcome more new joiners across the coming year to boost our expertise across audit, tax and advisory."

EY appoints five partners to its forensic investigations team 

25 Jan - EY has appointed five new partners to its UK & Ireland Fraud Investigation and Dispute Services (FIDS) team as record growth is expected to see revenues hit the £100m mark this year.

David Higginson and Trevor Horwitz will be working with businesses to tackle all forms of financial crime in addition to advising companies that are faced with regulatory investigations and enquiries related to economic sanctions, money laundering and financial misstatements. Eoin O’Reilly has been appointed to head up the Data Analytics function in Ireland and Melissa Myatt and Richard Abbey have been appointed to lead teams specialising in responding to complex corporate fraud and bribery cases as well as regulatory breaches across multiple jurisdictions.

John Smart, Head of EY’s UK Fraud Investigation and Dispute Services team comments: “We have added five really talented and experienced individuals to the partnership, and they strengthen our strategy of integrating technology and analytics into our investigations and regulatory compliance work.”

French Duncan appoints new cloud services manager

20 Jan - French Duncan has appointed Mary Blyth to the newly created position of Cloud Services Manager.

Blyth has extensive knowledge and expertise in advising and implementing cloud accounting solutions for owner managed businesses.

Commenting about her appointment, she said: “I’m very pleased to accept this new position to manage the growth of French Duncan’s cloud services.

“My remit focuses on developing the availability of cloud based services to our client base, from advisory services, through to implementation and onto the delivery of significant efficiencies and improvement in management information available to business owners.

Gibson Booth hires new staff

22 Jan - Barnsley based accountants Gibson Booth have hired two new members of staff. Danial Wilson has joined as an accounts assistant, and Keely Stanley joins as a tax assistant.

Managing director Robert Watson said: It’s great to have two new members of staff joining our team. 2015 was a great year for us, and 2016 is already looking bright.

“Both Daniel and Keeley have already shown initiative in their respective jobs and they’re both going to make fantastic additions to our team.”

GT appoints new Head of Innovation 

15 Jan - Grant Thornton UK has appointed Ian Rowland as the new Head of Innovation Group. Rowland replaces Dominic Preston with effect from 1 January.

Rowland has over 16 years tax experience, with a main focus on advising owner managed companies and entrepreneurial clients, and is a specialist in R&D tax.

Commenting on his appointment, Rowland said "Innovation is the lifeblood of business and for the UK to continue its role as a leading global hotspot for innovation, companies need to recognise how crucial R&D tax relief and Patent Box can be, both to the long-term growth of their company and to the creation of a more vibrant economy. "

Marsland Nash Associates appoints new partner

13 JanMarsland Nash Associates has appointed Nathan Murphy to the position of equity partner.

Murphy joined Marsland Nash associates in August 2007 as a client mananger, having previously worked at an accountancy firm in the Chudleigh area.

Murphy said: "It is a great honour to be appointed to the position of equity partner. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the firm and hope to continue delivering proactive, exceptional, services to our extensive list of clients. This just seemed to be the next step in my career and I am very fortunate to be able to rely upon the services of the other two partners, Steve Marsland and Zohan Nash, both of whom have been very supportive to me.”

French Duncan appoints Head of Corporate Tax

13 Jan - French Duncan has appointed Stephen Thom to the newly created position of Head of Corporate Tax, Glasgow.

Previously with GT in Glasgow, Thom has also worked in the tax advisory team at Lloyds Banking Group in Edinburgh and in the corporate tax team at BDO’s London office, where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant via the trainee programme.

Of his appointment, Thom said: “I’m very pleased to head up French Duncan’s corporate tax team in Glasgow and look forward to working alongside my colleagues to help our clients receive the best professional corporate tax advice.”

PKF Cooper Parry and Clement Keys finalise merger

12 JanPKF Cooper Parry has completed its merger with Clement Keys to create the “largest independent firm of chartered accountants in the Midlands region”.

The merged firm will be trading as PKF Cooper Parry and has combined revenue of £30m and 350 people across its two offices in the East and West Midlands.

Ade Cheatham, chief executive of PKF Cooper Parry, said: “This is an exciting and significant merger for both firms. We share a closely aligned vision to be number one in the privately owned market across the whole of the Midlands through creating a fiercely independent firm which is purely focused on exceptional client service.”

Francis Clark merges with Princecroft Willis

12 Jan - Francis Clark is merging with Princecroft Willis from 1 April.

The firm will trade under Francis Clark and will have combined revenue of £38m and a team of over 580 people across nine offices.

Andrew Richards, a current partner at Francis Clark, said: “We are extremely proud of the reputation we have developed in the South West. The merger with Princecroft Willis will broaden our geographical reach into Dorset and Hampshire and strengthen the outstanding services we will continue to offer all our clients, leading to opportunities for all areas of the business through our sector expertise.”

Trio of new partners as GT invests in Yorkshire practice

12 Jan - Grant Thornton has invested in the growth of its Yorkshire practice with three senior appointments.

Dan Rosinke joins as a partner in transaction advisory services; Martin Barron joins as a partner in recovery and reorganisation; and Rachel Engwell as a partner in tax.
