A round-up of the latest news, appointments, executive moves and acquisitions from the world of practice during February 2015.

EY expands assurance practice

23 February - EY has appointed director Catherine Reid to its growing assurance practice and to lead its Entrepreneur Of The Year Awards programme in Yorkshire and Humberside.

Reid, who joins EY from Grant Thornton in Yorkshire, has more than 10 years’ experience advising and leading audit work for fast growing, entrepreneurial companies, as well as large corporates and listed groups.

At EY she will lead teams in auditing many of the firm’s largest clients, as well as providing advice and support to companies on issues relating to international growth.

Mathers to join corporate finance team

18 February - Rod Mathers has been recruited as a partner in its corporate finance team at Henderson Loggie.

His remit will be to work with the firm’s extensive client base to support their growth and succession plans and on creating other deal opportunities across Scotland.

David Smith, managing partner of Henderson Loggie said: “We are delighted to have someone of Rod’s calibre join our team. He brings a wealth of experience having worked in a number of different accountancy firms and, importantly, in a range of businesses not just in the UK but overseas. Stuart Gardner joins EY as restructuring director

17 February - Stuart Gardner has joined EY’s Channel Islands Transactions Advisory team as a director, responsible for Liquidations and Strategic Exit Routes (LASER) services.

Gardner will be the first fully licensed, appointment-taking, UK insolvency practitioner of a Big Four firm in the Channel Islands.

He joins EY with almost a decade of experience working in the Channel Islands’ professional services industry.

KPMG hires cyber security experts

16 February - KPMG has strengthened its UK cyber security and business resilience practices with two new senior appointments.

Ken Hall joins as a partner, and Curtis Baron joins as a director.

Hall joins KPMG from Wipro where he was the head of the Global Cyber Security Consulting practice. He has more than 25 years of IT experience and has worked in a number of sectors including finance, media, telecommunications, energy and utilities.

Baron joins KPMG from RBS, where he was the group head of resilience. In this capacity he led a function that managed the strength of the banks most critical activities and delivered major technology and infrastructure improvement programmes across multiple brands.

Price Bailey expands insolvency team

06 February Price Bailey has expanded its Insolvency and Recovery team with two new senior appointments.

Matt Howard joins Price Bailey from BDO Norwich as an insolvency and recovery partner. He has extensive experience in dealing with all aspects of corporate and personal insolvency together with informal arrangements and turnarounds.

Stuart Morton also joins Price Bailey from the BDO Norwich office. He is a qualified insolvency practitioner and his remit is to offer prompt advice and effective solutions when businesses and individuals face financial pressure and distress.

Bishop Fleming sustains growth

05 February - South West firm Bishop Fleming says it has grown its business through new clients and rising staff levels in 2014.

The company now has offices in Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Plymouth, Torquay and Truro, as well as Worcester in the Midlands.

It now employs 300 staff and serves more than 7,000 clients.

Matthew Lee, managing partner, said: “We take great pride in our policy of growing our own, while we continue to attract senior specialists from Big Four firms. We are also proud of our staff retention, with 44% having more than five years' service and 25 staff having more than 20 years' service.”

Moore Stephens appoints head partner

05 February - Moore Stephens has appointed Simon Gallagher as managing partner.

Gallagher joined Moore Stephens in 1999 and its partnership executive committee in May last year.

He is also head of the firm’s Insurance Industry Group, specialising in audit, business and systems assurance, and regulation.

He is also responsible for delivering risk management and regulatory consulting services across the insurance sector.

Grant Thornton promotes tax specialist to partnership

04 February - Grant Thornton has promoted international tax specialist Paul Scully to the UK partnership.

Scully joined Grant Thornton’s tax team in August 2010 as a director and for the last five years has specialised in International tax.

Carl Williams, managing partner of GT in the North West, said:

“Paul’s deep knowledge of international tax regimes is a powerful asset for anyone doing business overseas. He’s an exceptionally talented business advisor and has a sharp insight – an ally who can help companies maximise the upsides and minimise the risks of operating globally.”
