The Payroll Site has won in the payroll category of the AccountingWEB Software Satisfaction Awards 2013 with an impressive overall SSA score of 95%.

Winning for the third year running, The Payroll Site was one of the smaller contenders in this specialist category, but scored very highly when it came to customer advocacy and overall feedback. It was also the sole cloud representative in the SSA13 payroll shortlist. The final SSA13 Payroll scores are:

Payroll software winner: The Payroll Site (95%)

Shortlisted:

  • Moneysoft (88%)
  • Brightpay (87%)
  • Big Red Book (86%)
  • Sage 50 (75%)
  • Quickbooks (56%)
  • Sage Instant (54%)
  • IRIS (36%)

The Payroll Site’s customers rated the company an average of 4.7 out of 5 for ease of use, functionality, support and value for money.

As is appropropriate for the year following the mandatory introduction of RTI efiling, the shortlist was dominated by companies offering low cost solutions for very small businesses.

The Irish application Big Red Book scored highly in the customer advocacy with support and ease of use on a par with that of The Payroll Site, while Moneysoft edged close to 90% for its overall rating and got more than 4.8 out of 5 for ease of use and value for money.

Brightpay - which had the largest share of the vote (22%) and offers a free system for fewer than three employees - scored highly for value for money and ease of use.

The new web-based IRIS OpenPayroll application scored highly on value for money and support, but like other highly rated products including 12Pay and Pegasus Opera Payroll, it did not register enough ratings to make it on to the payroll shortlist.

Paul Rains, director of Transact HR and vice chair of the Chartered Insititute of Payroll Professionals, commented on the dearth of cloud products in this category: “In the professional world there is a reluctance to put such sensitive information in the cloud, but I think it’s the way forward for delivering software as a service, particularly for small businesses who don’t have IT support and don’t want to maintain and support software on their own hardware.

“The other big draw with SaaS products is accessibility: you can run your payroll from anywhere and at any time and most offer a mobile option too,” Rains said.

Rains added that the RTI transition had been good for the payroll profession as it had sold a lot of software: “It’s been good for the payroll software industry and hopefully payroll professionals will reap the benefits at the end of this tax year.

“Everyone is now submitting RTI files now and sending information to HMRC – who incidentally hold all this information in the cloud!”
