Transport for London has referred taxi app Uber to the Revenue over its tax affairs.

TfL, which is chaired by London mayor Boris Johnson, doesn't have powers over where a company pays tax. However, it referred the app's affairs to HMRC following a complaint from senior Labour MP Margaret Hodge that the company was "opting out of the UK tax regime".

The BBC reported she was pleased by the referral, saying that she hopes HMRC carry out a "rigorous and thorough investigation" to make sure Uber is paying tax at an appropriate level, the BBC said.

The firm's operating company Uber BV is based in Holland and does not pay tax in the UK.

An Uber spokesperson said it did pay tax in "all jurisdictions" however, including VAT, corporation tax, payroll tax and sales and use tax.

The app, featured in our top travel app round-up, has caused some controversy in the 45 countries in which it operates. It was once banned in Germany and according to one publication faces the axe in India.

It allows users to find out where the nearest Uber cab is, lift share and track their reserved vehicle's location.
