Two councils in West Suffolk have gone live with a shared enterprise resource planning (ERP) platform as part of a plan to streamline operations and cut costs.

The launch was revealed at the UNIT4 customer conference in Edinburgh today.

By sharing services like management, staff, offices and T&Cs, the councils have been saving £3.5m every year since 2012. The two councils, St Edmundsbury Borough Council and Forest Heath District Council, now share a single technology platform from UNIT4 Agresso, which features a single database using standard processes and accounting structures.

Following a “rigorous selection process” the new platform was purchased and implemented by specialist partner Methods Enterprise taking seven months from start to finish, delivered on time and on budget.

UNIT4 Agresso is being used to streamline operations not only across finance and procurement for both councils, but also for all services through development of processes.

The councils expect to cut admin costs by sharing business software as they say it will give staff access to finance and procurement self-service, improve collaboration and allow employees to access information.

UNIT4 said the solution can be configured by the internal shared services team so it will be able to adapt to changes and have a lower cost of ownership than traditional ERPs.

In the last year UNIT4 has reported a modest steady increase in public sector revenues, including deals with the University of Bristol, Aberdeen University and Middlesbrough Council.

Anwen Robinson, managing director of UNIT4 Business Software, said they were delighted to be partnering with the West Suffolk and Methods Enterprise team.

“Based on a proven track record of success, and its ability to adapt to change, UNIT4 Agresso is now the ERP of choice for shared services in the public sector. It enables organisations to quickly scale operations while also reducing the cost of change,” Robinson added.
