Bermuda on the horizon

After BD’s bombshell last week, I’ve been investigating whether I should indeed look at emigrating to Bermuda.

From pictures of it online, it looks a stunning place.

Flight time according to Skyscanner is 11 hours via the US.  That’s a long time if I needed to get home to the UK to see friends or family.

The local Chartered Accountants’ website is still showing “news” from 2012.  That seems a long way out of date.

Plus the fact that a lot of the jobs available seem to be “Big 4” types, and I’ve never been keen on the idea of working with them.

I think BD could be going to Bermuda on his own.  I’ll miss him very much if he does go, though.  He’s a great colleague.  (For the avoidance of any doubt, BD and I are not an item!)

And he has planted a seed in my mind about whether I want to stay in the UK for the rest of my life.  I have good friends and family here, and at the moment I do enjoy this role.  But I have hardly ever travelled.  Is it time to think about working abroad for a couple of years?  Where would readers recommend?

Personally, I love Canada - having had about 7 trips there with my previous job.

The people are so friendly. It is a great hybrid of American with a British undertone. Not so 'in your face' like the US can seem.

You do need to learn to like snow though. I was always there for year end, which tended to be Jan, and about -32

Bermuda probably
I share your view on the big 4 but if the income was so high that my main worry would be whether to buy a beach hut or jet ski this month, I'd take the beach hut in Bermuda.

choose the lifestyle ...

...then the country.

If language is an issue, that narrows it down a lot.

Like the outdoors? New Zealand.

Like the sun and the beer-and-bbq scene? Australia.

And so on.

I spent 2 years in Switzerland and loved it. I then went to Hong Kong, where I've been for the last 6 years. I can't imagine going back to the UK. Most international businesses speak English but I would still strongly recommend learning the local language because local colleagues really appreciate the effort (or learn as much as it as you can - my grasp of intonations in Cantonese is poor - they all sound the same to me).
