Change of scenery this week.

Earlier this year, I took on two voluntary posts. One as trustee of a small local charity, and another as a school governor. This week, the charity held a strategy day, where we discussed the plan for the next five years. This was followed in the evening by a school governors and staff meeting.

I am enjoying both activities a lot more than I initially thought I would.

We had really interesting discussions during the strategy day about ethics. I made the point that just because an organisation is commercial (ie private sector) it does not mean it is not ethical. There was some fairly strong disagreement with that.

However, we also discussed how much competition there is between charities engaged in the same sector bidding for the same funding streams.

I visited our auditors on Friday, for the day job, and was pleasantly surprised to find that most of their staff were actually out of the office on a 'community day'. I must feed that back to the charity as a good example.

During the day, I also had to think back to my CIMA studies - and try and cement the differences between Vision and Mission statements etc. I always got stuck with that.

The governors meeting went very well - it was actually a social event in a pub with skittles - but that really helped the team building, given that the new governors were appointed (including me) just before schools broke up for the summer.

On Sunday 30th September last year, I was driving to Companies House to drop off the accounts having got them agreed over the weekend - so we are one day ahead this year. The perils of working for an international firm with differing views on everything mean, however much we try, we always seem to be on the deadline. An improvement in recent years following many years of late filings.
