With the end of the year imminent and all that entails for accountants, we like to do our bit for seasonal good cheer by celebrating the stars of our community.

As we count down the doors on our advent calendars the end of the year heralds another annual tradition: the AccountingWEB Community Awards.

The awards are our opportunity to raise a symbolic glass of mulled wine in tribute to the fine folk of AccountingWEB.

What continues to set AccountingWEB apart is the way so many members share their time and expertise to help other accountants. Last year’s winners included Portia Nina Levin (Member of the Year), Paul Scholes (Technology Champion), Steve Kesby (Tax Whiz) and Kent Accountant (Blogger of the year).

Like previous years, this year’s awards will be split into several categories and to open up the field a little, previous winners will not be eligible in the same category this year - but you can nominate them for others.

Click the links below to start putting forward your nominations. In most cases the community team will base the final winners on community acclaim, but some of the decisions will be based on objective evidence such as how many times the nominee has been thanked during the year.

So, who has helped you most this year with their unrivalled intellect and tax knowledge on Any Answers? Whose technology advice has swayed you into a paperless, connected accounting lifestyle? And whose comments have brightened up your daily grind with their witticisms?

The winners will be announced just before Christmas.

Alongside the Community Awards, we will be indulging in our annual gadget review and rounding up quotes of the year to capture and catalogue the essence of 2014. If you have any suggestions or comments on any of these themes, don’t hesitate to let us all know. It makes a nice break from tax work, and as we may have mentioned once or twice before, the comments that you make are what make AccountingWEB what it is.

Small Practice Matters

They are many contributors, on small general practice issues, that I find helpful in what they say and how they say it.

By small practice issues, I mean anything that is not tax related. This includes marketing, pricing, competition etc. In other words the day to day real issues that small practice owners face. Tax is one of them, but it is already covered.

Maybe there needs to be a category for Small General Practice Contributor of the year? Here are some of the people in this category I am thinking about. Those who I have found keep it real! In no particular order:

Ken HowardLocutusPeter SaxtonMaslinsAndy Partridge (please come back!) Paul Scholes

Please note, I am not saying I agree with everything they say. At the same time, I value their opinions.

Edit: Left out the ever helpful wilcoskip as a  Small General Practice Contributor.

Errors

Every time I get a notification for this blog and I select the link I get the following error.

"The website encountered an unexpected error. Please try again later."

I brought it up with Rachael and she seemed frustrated that nobody was dealing with it. Is it just going to be a permanent error?
