D/E The curse of our times

Did anyone see Newsnight last night, particuarly the bit about Better Capital and the competition amongst home delivery firms?

The "experts" came up with the same common-sense solutions as I suggested in my previous post.

Perhaps if the people running Better Capital had not been so obsessed with "balancing the books" they could have thougt of and implemented them?

This "balancing" curse encompases everything in our Society.

In 2011 I was on holiday and met someone senior in the adminstration of the NHS.

He told me in the last year of the Blair government the NHS budget was £7b more than the NHS could spend. The NHS did not take it.

The following year they asked for it back, and were denied it.

I can believe that, as I remember visting my elderly mother in law in a NHS hospital. About 12 feet away was a nurse in a chair staring at my mother in law.

So I went over and said "Excuse me, why are you staring at my mother in law?"---to which she responded "That is my job"! to which I responded "Why?"

To which she responded "To make sure she does not fall out of bed". This was an agency nurse at £?00 per hour. Presumably the hospital was balancing its budget?

My mother in law lived to be 101 and to my knowledge she never once fell out of bed.

The NHS staff do a fabulous and comitted job.

Can we stop cursing them with budgets which are either too big or too small but just give them what they need?

Similarly can we stop cursing companies like Better Capital being run by accountants that are only interested in finding ways of making the figures balance, rather than business people that can make the Company work?

New Year resolution for 2015?
