End of Quarter One Looms

For those companies with a December year end, we are into March and already nearly a quarter of the year gone!! For those with March or April Year ends, they’ll be ramping up the efforts for year end and ensuring that they have won as many new clients as possible.

So with the media painting a positive economic outlook, how has the year started? Can you see any changes from last year? Are they more companies in buying mode?

If you have tried new approaches, new lead generation techniques – have they delivered, or is to early to comment?

The key point is:

Are your team sticking to plan?

Plans give clarity.

Clarity leads to focus.

Focus leads to correct actions.

Team members know what they should be doing to generate new opportunities and are then able to nurture those opportunities through the defined sales process stages, as they move through the year.

I genuinely hope that your 2014 has got off to a great start – or that you will enjoy the stresses and strains of Year End for the next few weeks. However, if you aren’t winning as many clients as you should be, then maybe an outside view would give some clarity.

If you would like a FREE 15 minute conversation, to see if we could work together, to help you win new clients, then email me on [email protected] to arrange a conversation. I look forward to hearing from you.

Some advice

You say that you give business development advice to accountants.

Here is some free advice to you.  Dumping 9 blogs in a row on Aweb is not good for your business.

looking at your

networking blog...perhaps you need to take your own advice in regard to 'there is always someone who comes on strong' in regard to a networking group always containing one pushy salesman....just a tip for you.

@RL

As I know you're a cricket fan, this one brought back memories.

The great man is on record as saving he's the fastest bowler he ever faced, mind you he was in his forties in this clip.

Watch from 5.57.

And the stats

Good idea to turn this thread into one about cricket.

I have to confess to never having heard of that fast bowler before. The pitch did look a bit green and bouncy, though. Sounds like injury and steroid controversy took him out of the game. I'd also forgotten VivR played for Glamorgan, though I do remember Majid Khan being their overseas star player a couple of decades before.

Pedantic cricket note: at the top of the match stats page, cricinfo have this a 40 over match when in fact it's 50 overs. Interesting to see that back then, they didn't record the number of balls faced by each batsmen.

Viv

Also played for Middlesex - saw him square cut a six at Lords (in the days before shortened boundaries and super charged bats).

Cricinfo - judging from the old web pages it looks like they use to have someone typing match stats on a word processor in their bedroom using the sports pages of the newspaper for reference.

Remember watching the match on live TV thinking he looked a bit nippy - fast bowlers with that sort of action never last long. Give our current moustached arch nemesis another 18 months and he'll be crocked - just in time for the next Ashes series ;)

Good link

I'm also a cricket fan, but don't recall Spencer.  He looked a bit lively!

@Kent

I salute you, sir! You are a great source of cricket trivia and not-so-trivia. It's easy to get distracted, isn't it?

That blog is very insightful about batting not just being timing, but also weight transference up from the feet/legs/hips, etc. The same applies in a lot of sports -  rowing, boxing, kayaking, tennis.

EDIT. Thinking about it a bit more, it could be that the ball accelerated due to picking up top spin from the bat. It's often seen with table tennis.

Oh look - he's just posted another bl**dy blog! Quick, follow me!

Yes, I've spent many hours starting on Cricinfo and then finding a few gems.

As you're interested in cricket, check out this guy's YouTube channel.

He also does requests!

Right must get some work done - spent most of the day not doing what I should have  - what with clients phoning with lengthy queries and calling by for a chat (that's another £100 on next month's invoice) not to mention sorting out a skip for the weekend and getting photos done for the kids passports...

Damien Martyn - yes, know what you mean, he did have a habit of doing that though.

Ah, I remember ...

... Canterbury, May 1983 (when they still has the tree inside the boundary) - one of the best Sunday League innings I ever saw from Chris Tavare, 82 and full of boundaries, even a couple of 6's - he was a completely different player in one day matches to the boring slow player in test matches - it was an innings Botham would have been proud of.

We used to watch a lot, I was on the border so was quite happy watching Middlesex or Surrey, my friend was avid Kent, his father having come from there. We also also lucky that my friends uncle was high up in Guildford Borough Council (he became chief executive) and a big-wig at Surrey CC (I believe he was a president a few years back) and we used to get to sit in the pavillion and saw all the players in there, but kids were well mannered back then and selfies weren't invented so we never got to talk to them - just being near was treat enough!

Incidently, my cricketing claim to fame was I sneeked off for a pre-work quick nine holes at a littel course in Addlestone a few years back and this burly black gentleman asked if I minded if he played a round with me as he had just come back from his grandfathers funeral in the West Indies annd fancied some golf but also some company. I said no problem, and let hiem tee of first. His shot rocketed off a great pace and I noticed the name, M Lynch, on the baggage tag on his golf bag, I asked the obvious question and got an affirmative, how humble was I playing golf with one of my school boy Surrey heroes - I could never have imagined playing golf with him having spent all those years watching him play cricket around the home counties.

I have to say he was a wonderful man, very patient with my moderate golf skills, he could hit his 9 iron further than I could my 3 wood! That is one of those days I will never forget.

I remember Chris Tavare ...

My dad used to take me down to the St Lawrence in the 1980s (I'm a Kent boy).

I remember exactly the same about Chris Tavare.  I couldn't believe it was the same player that I had seen play on TV, as a six whistled over my head.

We had some great players in that era ... Chris Tavare, Graham Dilley, Derek Underwood, Alan Knott.

Chris Tavare for all his faults at Test level, would have been a great asset in the last Ashes series.  I we had been losing wickets at only one end then it probably wouldn't have ended up 5-0.

Don't forget Bob Taylor ...

... and Cowdrey junior.

Middlesex of course had Gatting and Emburey and Edmonds, Butcher, Cowans Slack - oh happy days
