Gadgets to Die for

To set the scene for AccountingWEB's traditional Christmas gadget countdown, here are a few of my favourite things as the song has it.

Arcam rCube

Over 3,000 page impressions can't be entirely wrong. The Arcam rCube is still proving to be a delight a year on.

The quality of its musical reproduction is second to none in this price bracket (now down to around £250). Not only that but this stylish piece of kit is genuinely portable, at least within the home and garden.

As a reminder, it can take an iPod with the traditional connector directly and with the appropriate dongles, links in remotely to music from an iPod or computer.

Whether giving or receiving, this is the ultimate in luxury.

GolfBuddy Platinum

With a price that is a little more than the rCube, at first glance this is a GPS that does nothing more than tell you distances on the golf course. As such, it might seem rather expensive.

While that is undoubtedly the case, committed golfers are investing in this kind of technology with all of the enthusiasm of lemmings diving off cliff tops.

There is a good reason for this frenzy. Those that are addicted to the sport will spend significant amounts on anything that will take a shot or two off their handicap.

This pocket sized computer is likely to do just that. Forget about a flashy driver or new electric trolley, if you want to become a better golfer in 2014 this is the way to go.

Powertraveller’s  Minigorilla

Minigorilla charger

These days, as technology takes over our lives, packing power units for all of the goodies that we take on holiday can seem like a massive chore, while some airlines will charge us significant sums for the pleasure.

This pocket sized battery can save the trouble of taking anything else. It will charge or run a netbook, iPads and iPods, mobile phones, Kindle s and pretty much anything else you can think of. All you need is the right combination of "gorillanuts".

Nike FuelBand

Nike Fuelband

For those that want to get fitter, this is the perfect exercise aid. The slim, sexy wristband has just gone into a second edition, which is more colourful but equally effective.

The FuelBand measures exercise and exertion telling you how many proprietary fuel points you have achieved each day, as well as numbers of steps taken, miles walked, calories expended and now "hours won" which is apparently the latest measure for avoiding strokes.

The data can be uploaded to a computer or sent wirelessly to iPods and iPads.

Logitech K750 Solar Powered Keyboard

Logitech wireless keyboard

If your budget doesn't quite get to £100 plus, there are still really desirable gadgets on the market.

It is good to be able to play with a computer and at the same time feel virtuous. That is exactly what this slim and elegant keyboard allows users to do.

While it works perfectly well with a netbook, PC or tablet, the style is very much that of a laptop keyboard, with slim, light touch keys that are easy to operate.

However, one of the main reasons for purchasing this product is its ability to run for three months at a time on the power of the sun or more realistically in the United Kingdom an artificial light source.

Those who are tempted to invest might like to pair this with a new mouse, the T400 Zone Powered Mouse also from Logitech, coming strongly recommended.
