The IRS are closing their office at the Embassy in London (and all non-US locations) on 30 June 2015. While announced as part of a budget cutting exercise, with over seven million Americans living outside the United States, this will be really bad news for some groups of individuals.

David Treitel, Managing Director of American Tax Returns in London says:

Mailing tax returns?

“Americans overseas will now have to mail tax returns to the United States instead of the Embassy. Tough? Well yes, as the Post Office in the UK will charge international postage each year and simply cannot track a delivery to an IRS building located in the United States.”

Applying for an ITIN?

“Individuals who need to apply for an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) on an IRS Form W-7 can no longer visit an IRS office local to where they live.

With the IRS rejecting 50% of ITIN applications anyway, getting an ITIN sometimes seems a losing game. Anyone applying for an ITIN will now have only two choices, mail their original passport to the IRS in Texas or use a firm such as American Tax Returns Ltd in London who are licensed by the IRS as Certifying Acceptance Agents to handle ITIN applications on behalf of the IRS.”

Goodbye IRS, it has been good having you nearby! Your presence in London will be missed.
