Joey Tempest, lead singer of Swedish rockers, Europe said it best when he sang:
“It’s the final countdown! Ba Ba Ba BAAAA BA BA BA BA BAAAAAA…”
He wasn’t a fountain of knowledge though; after all he was under the impression we were heading for Venus. Regardless of his geographical shortcomings, Tempest was on to something. Final Countdown has become as much an unofficial new year’s anthem as the Pogues - Fairytale of New York, has become the unauthorised go to Christmas track.
Irrespective of Europe’s most popular song (a quick Google search implies that they had other big hits…) becoming the countdown track, I think the accountancy world has missed a trick. As the self assessment tax deadline lurches ever closer, Tempest’s dulcet tones would have given a defiant fist pumping edge to ‘Hell Month’
Instead of the stress that helps keep many hair loss clinicians in Jimmy Choo’s, we could turn the month on it’s head. No longer would we suffer late nights, stomach ulcers and the social reticence of a slug draped in salt. Instead, we would be injected with the motivation that only Sweden’s third biggest band - behind ABBA and Roxette of course - can provide.
Obviously there are going to be some changes required, namely the ignorance of the lyrics, what few there were mainly centered around space travel and a woman who would be missed. Therefore, I have taken it upon myself to, rework this classic for the accounting profession.
[Verse 1]
We’re approaching the deadline
And all that I fear
What if I get a rejection
It’s HMRC who can tell
I guess there is no one to blame
We left it so late (it so late)
Will we ever see February again?
[Hook]
It's the self assessment deadline!
self assessment deadline
Ohh!
[Verse 2]
We’re completed the figures
And stand by them all
Cause we calculated
And tripled checked all
With so many hoops to jump through
And things to fill in (to fill in)
I’m sure that it all will be fine in the end
[Hook]
It's the self assessment
The self assessment
The self assessment
(self assessment). Ohhh oh oh ohhhh
The self assessment.
Ohhhhhhhhhh
It's the self assessment
The self assessment
The self assessment
(self assessment)
Ohhh. It's the self assessment
We're leaving togetherrrr.
(The self assessment)
We'll all miss her so
It's the self assessment (self assessment)
Ohhh. It's. the. Self. Assessment
