It's only the cost of a postage stamp....

Well, the recession claims another victim - no longer can we say that something is only "the cost of a postage stamp"  when we mean to say that it is a trifling sum. It is going to affect the business model of many people and it is a major announcement with hidden consequences, not for the people who delight in licking  lick their stamp and affixing it to a handwritten envelope when there is a birthday.  No my friends, it is going to hit people trading online and the users (not to mention suppliers) of mailing lists. Businesses sending out monthly statements will feel the hit. We tried by email and it was a toal disaster . For some reason if you want paid it has to go by post otherwise you can whistle. Bizarre , but such is life in spite of the ubiquity of technology.

Costs unmasked

The real trouble is that we are now starting to see the true cost of the postal service - and it's not pretty. Like BT, it's going to take time to get some real competition going and then we might see some real effort from the (eventually privatised) Royal Mail to please us, the customers, rather than relying on the junk mail industry.

Until then, time to stock up on stamps ... and shares in whichever company makes those bl**dy red rubber bands that litter the pavement.

They say once it is privatised ...

... that standards will drop. If this is true, then God help UK businesses. It's bad enough having a cheap crap service without paying through the nose for an even crappier service! Maybe TNT will take over Royal Mail and then we can all enjoy the crap postal service that HMRC enjoys (I hope I have remembered the correct postal supplier for HMRC!). Maybe TNT will even pay the clients penalties when the reminder letter that their self assessment has to be submitted within the next 3 months arrives too late for the client to do anything about it!

Back to reality. Lately, we receive our post in the early afternoon, except that quite often it isn't 'our' post but someone else's, and not always an immediate neighbour but for someone streets away, and for this reason we can never be sure that we ever receive our post!

... and the bl**dy red rubber bands wind me up too (and everyone else that I know)! Their delivery guys/gals have obviously never heard of 'Keep Britain Tidy' and they don't mind if a kiddy or an animal chokes on the rubbish they drop!'

@shirleym...you have issues clearly....

but glad to see it is not only  our area that suffers the rubber band trail.  Soon it will be cheaper to personally drop off the post to each client....at thats at £1.50 per litre - well if the fuel pumps haven't run dry by then....

My hubby has picked 12 rubber bands up off our driveway today! Maybe I shouldn't complain as it is proof that the postie does actually turn up at our house, even if it isn't our post that we receive!

I often feel like a nominee postie (both home and office) as we often skip around delivering post to the correct destination ;)

So I guess you may well get very annoyed

when you receive a letter from the post office saying someone has underpayed postage (often by 10p or so) and you have to send them a £1 in postage stamps (presumably the admin cost of resending the post etc.....

We have a huge box of red rubber bands and we recycle them . They're decent quality - clearly not made in China . Perhaps we have a flagship industry still alive and kicking in the UK ?

The good news upon reading the small print is that for franked mail it is *only* going to be 44p - rejoice !

I've been blogging on my website www.formationsdirect.com for some time with my non-PC view of the world of economics,business and other stuff. If you like to read the views of somebody who doesn't "toe the party line" you've come to the right place. Government cock-ups, financial turmoil , business scandals and people's behaviour - I've got something to say about it , whether you like it or not.
