We’ve seen lots of comments on AccountingWEB recently about the HMRC helpline number, and how difficult it is to find the number on their website. We’ve trawled through the website and discovered a number that you may be unaware of - the Agent’s Dedicated Line. This number is for Self Assessment and PAYE enquiries only.

By phone you can update or discuss your client’s:

  • personal details

  • employment details

  • personal allowances

  • expenses

  • payment notifications

  • notifications of benefits in kind, other earnings or income

  • amendments to Self Assessment tax returns

  • request for repayments, reduce payments on account or collection of tax payable through a PAYE code

You can call the Agent Dedicated Line on 0300 200 3311. Lines are open from 8am to 8pm, Monday to Friday and from 8am to 4pm on Saturdays. HMRC recommend using this helpline instead of the general number (0300 200 3310) as it provides agents with a more efficient service.

According to HMRC using this helpline means your call will be:

  • given priority and answered faster

  • put through to an adviser who has at least 12 months experience

  • transferred to technicians if necessary to ensure your query is answered wherever possible during your first call

This service is for authorised agents only. If HMRC cannot verify that you are authorised to speak to them on your client’s behalf, they will not proceed with the call.

Surely there are no agents who are not aware of the dedicated agents line as it has been going for years.

I agree with Anne. Surely the only agents who will not be aware of the dedicated agents line are those who are not actually agents at all but just barely competent form fillers who login to HMRC online using their "client's" personal credentials in order to slam in a bunch of numbers that they don't really understand. They then charge their "client" for this exclusive service. The lack of access to the agent line is offset by not having all the inconvenience of registering as an agent, or awkward stuff like MLR supervision etc.
