Mpg claims and the real world - anyone managed official figures?

The new Abarth500c is well and truly run in . Problem is that I am keenly watching the instant mpg gauge, if only because the fuel tank is small. My real world experience is somewhat below that of the manufacturer in a mix of driving conditions. Has anybody managed to get anywhere near the official figures ? Mind you, when working out business/private fuel use for a reclaim I am sure HMRC will stick to the figures from the manufacturer in the event of a dispute, which in this case are out by a very large margin.

I managed the trip fom Staines to Swindon ...

... on less than a gallon once, way above manufactures figures (well over 50mpg in 1.8 petrol Avensis estate), took about 3 times as long as normal and is quite daunting with a 40 ton track up your 'arris when pootling at 42mph down the M4!

Was it downhill  ? Did you have a tail wind ?

According to the stats you should have achieved it at 56 mph unless of course the waggon was actually pushing you along  :-)

My favourite moments are foot off pedal downhill when it shows 99.9mpg

Even better ...

... 99.9 mph at idle - Reigate hill is good for that!

Looking at changing to a Gulf soon, 78mpg is the best quoted figure but I'm determined to get over 80!

Just as well you don't convey my wife in your motor. She goes mad when I drive with the mpg showing. Sometimes I do actually try to maximise it esp when in My Land Rover , where the difference in driving style is 50% on the consumption

On a short journey on the motorway the speeding doesn't save much but on a run from M/cr to London you can squeeze up to 30 mins out of it

I've been blogging on my website www.formationsdirect.com for some time with my non-PC view of the world of economics, business and other stuff. If you like to read the views of somebody who doesn't "toe the party line" you've come to the right place. Government cock-ups, financial turmoil , business scandals and people's behaviour - I've got something to say about it , whether you like it or not.
