Thursday 9 April

I ordered more wall art for our office. It is a slide from our video that will be blown up. It will look great.

I met an actuary who is not in employment due to some personal issues in the past. He has worked for big financial intuitions. He wants to come as an intern. He has high-level experience. His excel skills are off the scale. I am thinking how best to use him?

He could design some Google forms for us. My plan is to get all clients forms online. I think he would be able to do this. Beyond Google forms, I am not sure what other work I could give him.

I am meeting another intern today at 6:30pm. She is a qualified ACCA. I am not sure why she is coming to see me. It would be good to meet her.

I will decide which way to go by tomorrow on both the interns.

I will be in the office tomorrow since I had Monday off. There is a lot to do.

Wednesday 8 April

A hectic day.

My employee texted me saying he will be off sick. This was then followed by my intern telling me that one her monitors was not working. What a great way start to my day!

Like other accountants, we work with dual monitors. It improves efficiency. I would go as far as saying there is 20% increase in output as a result of using dual monitor.

I moved my employees monitor to my intern and then called Dell for another monitor.

It took 2 hours of my short life to place an order for another  monitor. I was looking for the same model as we currently have. I did not have any luck. The new monitor will look out of place since the two monitors will not match.

I tried eBay and Amazon for the same model as the one we want to replace. There was one in US on eBay. Delivery time was 14 days. It was not a viable option.

The cost of repairing the faulty monitor is virtually the same price as buying a new one. This did not make it worthwhile.

I hope you see what I mean by IT headaches I mentioned yesterday?

I chased more clients to set up Direct Debits with Go Cardless.

Intern who use to work for me one day a week called today (the remaining 4 days she was an employee in another practice). She wants a meeting.I will see her tomorrow at 6:30pm.

I don’t think she is happy with her current job. She is experienced and I like her. I wish I had the budget to take her as an employee.

Tuesday 7 April

It was a tough day.

After 2 months leave, our intern was back today. It was good to see her. She is a great help, at the same time she is learning a lot with us. Our  male and female balance is restored. It changed the atmosphere in the office. We like it.

As you may know most of the issues in business are around staff and/or IT. At present, I am okay with staff. IT does take time to sort out.

We had problems with TaxCalc access. It was not TaxCalc but our own systems. I managed to sort it out. It took some time. New TaxCalc does look good. It needs to have the cloud version now.

Also chased more recent clients to set up Direct Debits through Go Cardless. I will keep an eye on this. No point in working for clients if they don’t pay.

actuary

He sounds like he has the intellectual and spreadsheet skills to pick up tax/accounts skills.

I suspect you could easily train him up to do processing work.

Actuary and timing

Hello RL, you are right, the actuary is a real intellectual.

He called today, saying that he has also been offered internship in one of the big banks. Further, there may be an opportunity of employment later with the bank. Real shame that I lost him, though more importantly he has found what he is looking for.

Hello readmylips,  thanks. I had thought about a separate blog posts for each day. I thought it would be too much of me on blogs section. Further, it be selfish of me to hog the blogs section. For this reason, I have one blog page for my working week.

Thank you for reading my blogs.

Thursday 9 April Update

I would like to provide a brief update about my meeting yesterday at 6.30pm with my ex intern. She is now a full time employee elsewhere.

She wanted a listening ear and advice on problems she is having in her current job. She is under a lot of stress and is not happy in her current job.

Some of her key issues include:

·         Work overload- unreasonable demands from her manager who is also the practice owner.

·         Her computer is very slow. Really not fit for the purpose anymore

·         Advice on how to handle job interviews

It was great to see her. We had a 3 hour meeting. I think I did help her on all aspects. It is such a shame I do not have the budget to employ her.

Should all Accountancy Bodies be abolished?

Dear Accounting Web

The Anti Money Laundering Regulations 2007 states that it is mandatory for all practicing accountants qualified by experience to register with HMRC. Members of professional bodies are required to hold practicing certificates to practice as accountants with additional fees. Is there really a need for professional bodies? Should they really be abolished?

Regards

Georgia

What are your thoughts?
