Friday 12 June

I need the weekend off. Due to my workload I will be in the office tomorrow from 9 am to 1 pm. Otherwise, I will not be able to relax.

I had 4 meetings today. Two of these were on Xero training. These are both recent clients. One was with a partnership client who wanted a catch-up meeting. The final meeting was with a potential sole trader client. He signed up on the spot. It does not happen often.

I am a little concerned about the other client who signed up on the spot early on in the week.  He has not signed the engagement letter. Maybe he needs the weekend to reflect. I will chase him next week.

I have not done any marketing this week.

My hayfever is worse today.

Thursday 11 June

I had a long discussion with my mentee and my intern to assess who would be better suited to become my employee. They are both great. It is a difficult decision. I wish (honestly) I could employ both of them.

My mentee would be interested in coming at a lower salary than her current salary. I cannot match her current salary. That threw me back. Her key reason, as I have mentioned before, is because she feels she would learn a lot from me. If you remember, she was my intern in the past.

Some of my peers are going on about me not paying my employee a reasonable wage. They don’t know how much I am paying! Interesting.

I am transferring my companies to Inform Direct for company secretarial functions. I think it is better than Made Simple. It looks pretty on the screen. One of the downsides is I cannot sort by date, deadlines, etc

I got a vague response from Xero on final accounts. Good that I received a response. Here it is:

“There is no defined date for final accounts we will have report packs within the next 8-10months. The stat accounts tagging will follow that”. In other words, it is not on the horizon yet. Shame.

Wednesday 10 June

Posting from my mobile so once again please allow for more than normal number of mistakes.

It was a stressful day. I had two client meetings and one potential client meeting. Further, they were a normal number of client emails to respond to.

I need that employee! No, I can't do it on my own. I know many can with a decent client fee level. Not me.

Potential client signed up on the spot. He tried to get the fee down. I pointed out why the fee is  what it is. He said okay! Why did I not use this approach before!

I pointed to him about the value of the advice he would be getting. It was not simply filing accounts.

Drafting this on Google Doc then pasting on to AW. Far better experience.

Tuesday 9 June

I need someone experienced asap! Today proved that working without an employee will adversely affect my business. I had to deal with routine client queries. They took time. I am not the right person for this type of work. As I mentioned before, my opportunity costs are substantial. It is bad for my business. I will act fast now and make a decision about the vacancy.

I sat through Xero’s “Executive Update” webinar. Gary doing his best PR thing. He is excellent at it.

They are still tight-lipped about Xero final accounts. It would be good to get an official Xero response. I have emailed them. Silence on this aspect is wrong PR for Xero. It is damaging. Why are they silent? They cannot stop talking how beautiful they are on other areas such as payroll and other functions they are bringing to help me as their partner.

I like Xero, at the same time I am not a blind fan.

Monday 8 June

It was a good day. I am coping well without my employee. One of the key reasons for this is we are so paperless. Also, we have a good (not perfect) electronic filing system.

I looked at our Xero Practice Manager today. It is in a little mess. Nothing that cannot be sorted. I will sort it this week.

One thing, I did not do till today, is keeping a record of potential client inquires. Xero PM has a function called Leads to do this. It will help to me to assess my win rate.

I had a potential client interest. I hope this goes well. I had a good run but with the last three, none of them signed.

I ordered another 100 brochures. The last order of 50 is all gone.

Shock horror

You had to deal with routine client queries! Is that not why the client engages you?

Wednesday ... feeling depressed. I over-ate. Must stick to diet and cycling.

Thursday ... feeling great today. Didn't get much work done though.

Friday ... feel down. More client queries makes me think I must get a couple of interns quickly.

Some of my peers are going on about me not paying my employee a reasonable wage. They don’t know how much I am paying! Interesting.

I would hazard a guess at either nothing or not the market rate.

How do I reach such a conclusion you might ask? Simply because you couldn't match the salary offered to your last employee and you also cannot match the salary of your former intern.

As usual

You talk without any sound info. You will get your thanks. That is your motivation on commenting on my blogs?

I am going from the information you have provided, which is that your former employee and former intern are earning more money than they would working for you.

My motivation is not thanks. Thanks are not important to me.

I believe I am free to share my thoughts on an open forum, as are you.

Are you saying that the two other employers are paying above market rate then?

You can call me a troll but it is not the case and seems rather weak on your part.
