My new clients

I’ve been building up my client base and looking for more work, mainly by word of mouth and business cards but I’ve finally put it on linkedin, facebook and twitter although I’m still working on how to do those properly, but at least I’ve made a start.

It seems like it is working as I’ve had a few clients (some very last minute ones) but it seems ok. Well, it is until I get,’ my boyfriend’s accountant said that travel expenses are allowable’ or I have a friend (not a good client to have) whose parents have bought a property to rent out and I get ‘everyone at work says you only have to do the tax return for the person who actually gets the rent’ and ‘my cousin’s parents accountants only do one tax return for their property’.

Great! I’ve been scouring the internet to see if it’s true. I’ve been out of full time work for 4 years but I’ve made sure I’ve tried to keep up to date with new developments. Plus, I’ve done some ad hoc and part time work so I didn’t think I had forgotten everything. For the property one, I can’t actually see it being true or at least not without a lot of paperwork being involved and even then I’m not sure we can get away with doing one tax return. And she’s my friend, so I can’t exactly tell her to get lost then. Why did I offer? Plus, she hasn't given me anything yet except a million questions so not even sure if she wants me to do the tax return.

I'm sure I must have had these questions when I was working full time but getting them now when I'm working for myself makes me question everything so much more.

Self doubt creeps in...

Self doubt creeps in when you are on your own. In a busy office you stand up and say "Can we get away with one return?" The chorus tells you otherwise and you get on and do it.

So use AW as your colleagues and do more reading - if I'm not sure I read there are good books and hmrc manuals are online (I know they are hmrc position but for most stuff its what we all know). Search any answers and stick to your guns friends or not. ?My way or the high way on tax :P

For all the changes and stuff from various chancellors most day to day major changes are well flagged so you are unlikely to miss them.

And if its really specialist find a specialist!

I have learned that you are thoughtful and know your stuff and want to get it right. Trust your judgement and stand your ground

Thanks

I have found some more links and potential answers to the question above.  I think earlier when I was being questioned and half looking it up, I probably didn't look or type it in right.  It is interesting looking up things and learning more about it but getting a specialist sounds like a good idea too.

Agree with coolmanwithbeard

I'm like you & in the process of setting up myself & I'm going through all the self doubt feelings too as I've been working for a motor company so haven't had to worry about SAs, tax positions etc but I'm sure it'll come back.

It's really nice to see that there are some people on here that are willing to give support to people like us, I've only just joined this forum & some people's comments have been a bit upsetting actually.

I'm looking forward to the future - trust your instincts, you'll know in your gut if it's wrong or right & then there's always HMRC or AW to help!!

Good luck to you!

Hope it goes well Lorraine :)

I've been on my own for over 10 years now and it has it's ups and downs but on the whole I love it.

I actually turned work down today which is a first I think - local firm who'd made their payroll manager redundant and needed help with Sage and SagePay. Sounded like a lot of hassle and I'm not a sage person. Actually felt good haha

Anyway keep us posted with progress if you want to

Totally agree

This is my first SA season as my own boss. I think my self-doubt comes from not being very busy and having time to think about questions too deeply rather than trusting my gut instinct.

I know we will get through this and that we know more than we think we do.............
