At www.bestonlineaccounting.co.uk we are well aware that there is just under one month to go before the start of the new tax year.

It may well be  a cause for concern but HMRC are expecting about one million employers to join real-time information (RTI) from their first payday in April.

Whether HMRC systems will be able to accept RTI submissions is not clear-albeit HMRC to their credit have been very active in their pilot programme hopefully ensuring all will go to plan (but those of you who file your personal tax returns on 31st January know how slow even the best systems can be!).

Employers should have received their second awareness letter from HMRC in February reminding them of their RTI responsibilities.

Some employers have reported receiving a letter which states that they have a “history of paying their PAYE payments late”. This information has been supplied by HMRC’s debt management and banking department. The aim is to make employers aware that HMRC are monitoring late payments and to start paying promptly and accurately.I guess this is the stick and not the carrot!!

Once employers join RTI, HMRC will know in advance of the due date what should be paid each month or quarter through the RTI employer payment summary (EPS).

Employers that have received a late payment awareness letter should review their payment records if they believe that they have paid on time. As ever if there is a discrepancy timely dialogue with HMRC is recommended.

Due to technical difficulties, some payroll providers are struggling to issue their payroll software containing the RTI upgrade. Those who have not heard from their payroll provider, should contact them to ensure they receive their release on time.At www.bestonlineaccounting.co.uk we are advised that all our software is RTI accredited click here http://www.bestonlineaccounting.co.uk/online-payroll/online-payroll-soft...

So good luck to all of you about to enter yet another (compulsory) HMRC led initiative!!
