Make the most of your New Year resolutions

It’s that time of year again. The one when many accountants, like everyone else, take a good look at themselves and ask: “What do I want to change?” writes Wendy Saunders, Head of Development at CABA.

According to a recent survey about New Year resolutions, the same ones tend to crop up year after year.

The top 10, in order, are lose weight, drink less alcohol, join a gym, quit smoking, see friends and family more often, change job or career, commit to a relationship, save money for a large purchase (eg a house or car), stress or worry less, and be more spontaneous.

None of these aims are really very surprising and chime with many of the issues that we at CABA see among accountants. People want to look better and feel better about themselves, to love and to be loved, and to be happier in their career and more financially secure.

But how can you make these resolutions work?

According to research by psychologist and author Richard Wiseman, something like 88% end in failure, but those that work tend to have these factors in common:

  • Concentrate on one resolution - don’t try to do too much at once. Decide which single thing you really want to achieve and focus on that.
  • Give your choice some thought over time - a spur of the moment choice of resolution is unlikely to reflect what you really want. Take some time to reflect on your decision
  •  Don’t just repeat “old” resolutions - if you have failed at a resolution before, having another attempt can be dispiriting. Even if you’d still like to achieve it, take a new approach.
  •  Don’t be vague - make your resolution as specific as possible. If you want to lose weight, think about how much; if you want to run a marathon, decide which one.
  • Make sure it is about your own desires - don’t just decide to lose weight because everyone else in your office says they want to. What do you really want from life? If it is to take part in an amateur dramatic production of Hamlet, then follow your heart.

Making changes in your life isn’t easy but keep these points in mind when you are making your resolutions and you should be more likely to succeed. Good luck!
