This coding notice has been circulating the office and creating quite a few laughs. It starts:
"You need a tax code so Jobcentre Plus can check your tax position when you come off Jobseeker's Allowance, or at 5 April 2013, whichever is sooner."
I happen to know this (ex-)client folded his business several years ago and has been unemployed ever since.
So why is HMRC putting him on a code of K250? Does the Jobcentre regularly give £35K BMWs to people on Jobseekers Allowance? I suspect not.
Answer - because some muppet in the PAYE dept has simply picked up the car benefit on his 2009/10 tax code and decided to put it on the 2012/13 coding! I would ask something like "don't they read these before they send them out?", but I already know what the answer to that one is.
Has anyone seen a dafter coding notice this year? I'm sure there are plenty out there.
