Scotland says no thank you - we say thank goodness

Being based in the North of England, we’ve been following the Scottish referendum closely.

BD believed that for Scotland to become independent would have been very costly for business.  “If they vote Yes, we’ll lose Scottish customers, because prices of everything will go up there and they won’t be able to afford us.  Some of them might even go out of business altogether,” was his view.

No 2 and I worried about the complexity of dealing with issues such as cross-border VAT.  It’s difficult enough to work out what rate of VAT to charge to customers in the wider EU.  Scotland wouldn’t have been able to walk straight into the EU, so there would have been cross-border issues there, too – another layer of complexity to cope with.

CD sounded like he agreed with the idea, though.  “Who knows more about Scottish issues – the Scots or the English?” he said.

And as for Mrs Dragon – “I’ve got enough to think about, let them fight it out for themselves.”

The general mood in the office this morning is one of relief that Scotland has voted No.

I wonder what the atmosphere is in offices north of the border today…
