So you want to work in the entertainment industry?
One of the things I’m often asked is what it’s like to work in the entertainment industry as an accountant – and what are the qualities needed. Working in the film, television or music industry calls for skills which not only cover technical competence and proficiency but also the ability to fit into a culture where dealing with artists and creatives may be a large part of the job – and that can be a tough call
For one thing it’s a very competitive environment and personality is obviously absolutely key. You have to be able to communicate with some pretty big egos and personalities – and it’s absolutely essential to be able to demonstrate a passion for the sector in which you want to work – whether that’s film, television or music. However, it also just as important to be as enthusiastic about finance as you are about the industry as no employer wants to be given the impression that you see finance as a way of simply getting a foot in the door.
So what sorts of roles are available? You could be working as a financial and planning analyst for an entertainment company reporting on the financial performance of TV and DVD titles or looking at acquisition and investment opportunities for music businesses monitoring the performance and liabilities of a film studio. As a commercial analyst you could be evaluating and analysing commercial initiatives and undertaking competitor analysis or you might be heavily involved in royalties accounting for a record label.
The important thing when seeking a role in this industry is to trust in your financial talent. Don’t get carried away with the glamour – at the end of the day what any employer wants is someone who can add value – not a budding pop star!
