September 11 – Spent rather too much of the day in the office for my liking on a Sunday.
Weekend working is not good for the spirit, at least when there’s no day off in the week in lieu to follow (which our people who cover on call at the weekend have). But on Friday We got a call to make a presentation to a big facilities manager on Monday.
Now I don’t like working for facilities managers. They take margin, rarely know what they’re doing and try to stop me talking directly to customer when I know I can add vest value but right now that old thing about beggars and choosers has some resonance so I came in to prepare a tailor made presentation even though I know if we’re asked in at that notice we’re likely to be the make-weights on some bid that requires three tenders when there’s always a real preferred candidate.
And yes, it shows how serious I am that despite feeling all that I still spent five hours on the task and reading up on the ultimate end customer to anticipate their likely needs and to tailor what I’m saying to them.
Will it work? Tomorrow will not tell I’m sure, but it has to be worth a try.
