Christmas is, of course, a time of celebration, kicking back and relaxing with family and friends, writes CABA's head of development Wendy Saunders.

For many people it is the best time of the year. However, it doesn’t work out that way for everyone. January and February are CABA’s busiest times of the year on the phones and most of the problems that prompt those calls arose over Christmas.

The issues are easy enough to predict: Relationship problems with partners and family, money troubles, even just sheer exhaustion after a year when many accountants have been put under extreme pressure at work.

Our experience over many years shows that the festive period is a time when these problems can  bubble to the surface.

This year at CABA, we are trying something a little different and encouraging accountants to try and give some thought to the problems that might occur during the next two or three weeks and to take a few simple steps to head them off.

Our website currently provides information such as how to plan the Christmas period with your family and friends, successfully de-stressing and how to approach festive finances in a sensible manner.

None of the advice is rocket science but it does underline the simple fact that Happy Christmases sometimes take a little planning. A few easy steps can make the festive period much more enjoyable.

Recently, CABA also launched a wellbeing survey into the lives and attitudes of accountants.

Responses from over 1,000 accountants revealed a detailed picture of their lives. For example, 74% of accountants surveyed feel as though they will have to work longer to secure a financially secure retirement and 6!% worried about future financial circumstances.

In these economically uncertain times, it's important to take care of yourself, and especially over the festive period.

From all at CABA, we’d like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Help from CABA is available 24 hours a day over the Christmas and New Year period through its free UK counselling and legal advice helpline on 0800 107 6163 or through its live chat facility at caba.org.uk.
