Will the Euro's fate alter your holiday plans this summer ?

At last the Euro is doing the honourable thing and slowly falling upon its sword, or at least reflecting the mess caused by the great Brussels farce

So it looks like we'll be taking a continental holiday this year . Th combined Dollar strength and Euro weakness makes a compelling case for switching to this side of the pond.

I am even thinking  of stocking up on goods from my Italian supplier  , and by pure fluke I am already booked to visit the western Med in June ....

No ...

... I have none, I am not going to waste roads shorn of mums taxi's and traffic blind school children and foul hot dry weather by going on holiday, I'll get an extra 30 - 40 minutes on my working day in my beautifully air-conditioned office. I'll wait until late autumn when the weather turns pleasantly cool and damp before considering escaping the rush hour torture for a few days. Trying to persuade the Mrs to go abroad this year, all the business trips I make to Aberdeen and Glasgow but I never get to explore so keep saying we should get a cottage in Scotland for a few days - might do it this year as we have a family wedding near Edinburgh in October so the planets are aligning nicely!

Brittany or Scotland ?

2 somewhat different sets of plans above

Avoiding the official holidays is a real plus and October in Scotland isn't too hot (!)

Trouble with France is that there are a lot of French people there but it's worth it if the price is a giveaway

Would you have changed your plans if it the pound was the one plummeting ?

If....

If the £ was plummenting then I think it would be too expensive for me to do, however in 'investment' terms it would be more sensible as the relative value of my asset would be increasing.

I'm not buying it as an investment though, it just makes sense as holidaying with 4 kids is ludicrously expensive to the point of making buying our own place good value.  The bonus with France is it is such a big country with such low population density that there is hardly anyone around to bump into, although you are correct that when you do see someone they are most likely to be French.  Also wine is cheap!

As beautiful as most of Scotland is the window of 'acceptable holiday weather' is just too small.

That depends ...

... on your perspective :o)

As a heat intolerant hay-fever sufferer Scotland is fine. My one "child" is approching 19 so not an issue, but having a dog foreign is not viable as I would never kennel her, being an English Springer luckily the wetter and muddier the weather the happier she is!

EU

I have always wondered what the EU has done for the British public and reached the conclusion that the EU has not benefited the great British public at all. There are many instances where membership has been detrimental - unrestricted immigration, fishing policy, unnecessary bureaucracy and regulations, cost, EU arrest warrant etc etc

But at last here is an instance where the EU has benefited many in the UK - by destabilising the region, destroying confidence in the currency and reducing the costs of holidays for those outside the eurozone.

However there is still no need for Britain to be an EU member to benefit!

EU and UK

I could not agree more

Trouble is that loads of people are swept up in the "cheap holiday" and easy travel story but fail to see th ebigger picture in all the  cr*p that Brussels churns out

Yesterday during one of my guest teaching sessions in a local secondary school I was asked why civil servants churn out so many new rules all the time . I replied that it is in their interest to do so as it keep them busy and ensures their jobs are safe - EU is a prima facia example

Off to Sardinia

We are stuck with school holiday times for some years yet - and have just booked a week in Sardinia. Never been before, but hoping should be good. Italian food goes down well with all the family, which helps holiday harmony.

School Holidays

Also stuck with the school holidays for a few years yet and will probably take the car to France or Spain again. The food, fuel and accommodation will represent even better value than usual.

Perhaps the civil servants who churn out all these new rules could be put to work finding legislation that could be cancelled. One rule in, two rules out.......!

Seem to remember something about this before the election along with bonfires of the quangos, fuel duty stabiliser and one or two other promises that evaporate with a coalition!

Coalition

At least you understand the fact unlike many others who simply write it off as another broken promise . One has to admit that they have made it work pretty well - just look at Italy over the years

Remember to check under your motor on the way home for any extra passengers
