Who's the boss?

March 9 – Three lots of good news.

Almost as her swan song as a divisional manager, and as her opening gift to the newly promoted manager of our new department, she and he together closed negotiation for the biggest deal this department has ever done. If no other department in this company grows in the coming year this one can now hardly avoid doing so. From being a new venture this ‘sideline’ hunch of mine has now turned into what might be a major profit centre.

Second, testing on our new kit making capacity has shown we can match quality standards of bought in components. We’re rapidly moving towards becoming a vertically integrated supplier.

Third, my wife’s enthusiasm for moving has waned. Schools in the area we wanted to move to may not, after all, be all she thought they might be. OFSTED is not the arbiter of all good things after all. I suspected that this may be the reason for her desire. If so she’s quickly persuaded herself it was misplaced.

Actually, I’m more convinced than she is that she should be looking for a new job anyway: she has unrealised potential and in a more flexible environment she might be able to fulfil it. But at the end of the day I’m a complete realist on this one. She listens to me. But she makes up her own mind. As she quietly reminds me, others might think of me as the boss. She doesn’t.
