2009 Christmas Gadget Countdown - 7. Digital cameras

If you haven't replaced your old digital camera with a new 8 mega-pixel camera phone, and prefer to keep your gadgets separate, what should you be asking Santa for this year?

Stuff magazine voted the 8.1 MP Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 the best 'bridge' camera, mainly thanks to its impressive Leica lens, and the Canon PowerShot G10 as the best 'compact' digital camera, and you won't go far wrong with their nominations.

At the cutting edge, see if you can get your hands on a Fujifilm Finepix F200EXR,a 12-megapixel monster with its Extreme Super CCD EXR sensor.

If a digital SLR is more your style, Samsung's new NX series of cameras are interesting as they have dropped the mirror box found in traditional DSLRs but still support interchangeable lenses, plus you get Wi-Fi connectivity and HD video with HDMI-out.

If you want a high-end fixed-lens digital camera, optical zooms now run from 20x up to a massive 24x on the new Pentax X70 and Nikon Coolpix P90. The superb image stabilisation on these cameras means that such huge zooms lenses are actually useable, even in handheld mode (with a steady hand!).

2010 is likely to see mobile phone manufacturers pushing the camera functionality of some of their phones to meet the demand for convergence devices, which camera manufacturers are going to be looking hard for ways to encourage us to buy new cameras as well.

Quite an interesting response to this selection from Gary Platt over on our sister site TrainingZone:

"I’ve got a completely different perspective to this. The best ‘small boy’ in my opinion is the Canon S90 and the Canon Powershot G10 has been superseded by the G11. Megapixels sizes of chips are now being seen by some photographers as a bad measure as more mega pixels generally means more noise in photographs in low light conditions and the new G11 has seen a reduction in its size by 4.7 megapixels, the result is a camera with an effective ASA capability of 1000 and above, which means you can take photographs in darker conditions without the use of flash and get a more natural appearance in your photographs."
