It wasn't that difficult

It turned out to be much easier than I expected. Apple has an excellent support article at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329 which explains how to transfer your iTunes library between computers using your iPod as an external disk drive. I used the same process using my portable USB hard disk as my iPod isn’t big enough to take the whole library.

There is definitely some built-in restriction on the number of computers you can synchronise an iPod with, but as this is only my second this wasn't a problem. I still think there could be a problem if you wanted to copy your iPod onto multiple computers. Luckily I don't.

It took about four times as long to copy out of Windows as it did to import the iTunes folder onto the MacBook, but there it was, complete with all the album artwork.

Now that’s one less thing I need to use my PC for in future!

Just the advice I needed!

Hi Nigel, I'm still interested in your progress with the MacBook, but haven't succeeded in convincing my partner it's time to get that iMac.

Nevertheless, I've switched my email and other space-hungry applications from my ageing desktop PC to a Dell laptop and recently started to manually transfer folders between my iTunes libraries on the two PCs (and found that I then had to import them to my library).

As a self-proclaimed tech guru, I should really have worked out the iPod transfer technique for myself. But now you've done the research for me, I've gained back the best part of a Saturday afternoon.

Many thanks.
