HMRC Business Advice Open Day

Tomorrow I am off to the HMRC Business Advice Open Day.  Having not attended one before I am little unsure as to what to expect.  I have booked on to the technical VAT seminar but other then that I am going to have a wander around the exhibition and grab lots of leaflets!  At the end of the day, it is a means of obtaining free information so I am sure the day will not be wasted.

Hi Sarah, did you find out anything useful on Wednesday? I've been to a few HMRC events in my time and find it really helpful to look them in the eye. It helps to discover that you are dealing with humans at the other end of the phone and email help lines and on several occasions I've come away with a store of useful information.

Of course, there have been other times when officials have shocked me with their attitudes to small businesses and practitioners, but those occasions have been fairly rare.

I'm sure other members will be interested to hear more about your experiences.

We enjoyed a very informative day out last week.  The seminars were fairly basic however the day is geared at general business owners rather than just accountants.

I managed to grab lots of leaflets and found the VAT stand in the exhibition to be particularly helpful with the questions I had.  We also had a long chat with the Agency Account Managers - they were very informative and open about the questions we asked - they were not scary at all!

I am now looking foward to the Employer Talk in April in Birmingham.

Tonight though, I am looking forward to seeing Rebecca Bennyworth at our local ICAEW seminar.  For anyone in the Worcestershire area the series of seminars are excellent value for money for 8 seminars ( as a start up, cost is important to me!).  I am CIMA qualified but they don't seem to mind me gate crashing!

I have a potential client who is newly self employed having being on jsa for about two years,he applied for working tax credits as newly self employed in january 2011 and only got a letter end of may asking him to provide proof that he is self employed and asking him to send original diary and invoices, from a department of the HMRC called B&C Compliance operations, this gets me thinkinh that the HMRC has no idea about setting up business. I ask because you mentioned small businesses and the HMRC in you comment ,your thoughts sir
