A smattering of business leaders, HMRC staffers and accountants featured in a New Year's honours list more notable for the CBE awarded to HMRC's child benefits director and an OBE for Kylie Minogue. John Stokdyk reports.
As the director of HMRC's Child Benefit and Tax Credit Offices, Richard Summersgill has presided over ongoing problems with child benefit overpayments and the loss in November of two data disks containing details on 25 million individuals - including bank account details for those who received benefit payments. HMRC chairman Paul Gray resigned over the "operational failure", but Summersgill has been rewarded with a CBE.
According to the Daily Telegraph, the decision to honour Summersgill is "understood to have caused tensions in Whitehall".
