The Home Office has launched a new UK-wide grants programme to encourage employers to set up a Payroll Giving scheme.
It will give employers with fewer than 500 staff a cash incentive of up to 500 and match the first 10 donated by each employee, every month, for a period of six months.
The scheme enables employees to give to charity straight from their gross salary and to get immediate tax relief of up to 40% of each donation.
Fifty-eight per cent. of working people questioned by YouGov in a recent poll for KPMG said their employers did not offer Payroll Giving.
The grants will be available to qualifying organisations signing up to Payroll Giving before the end of 2006, and will be backdated for those that have signed up since 6 April last year.
