I experimented on myself how I would handle one whole week without TV. Here are my Dear Diary extracts for the week that shows how it turned out. .

First day of no TV, I thought I would really miss TV - I don't. Well it is only the first day let’s see how things go. I pottered around the flat and completed some chores. I thought I would not relax without TV. This was not the case, just pottering around the flat relaxed me.

It is Saturday evening and want to watch TV! I must not. I want to see how my experiment goes. I will call my uncle in Africa to cheer me up.
Called uncle, completed ironing and listened to Stephen Fry's Audio book - The Stars Tennis Balls. Anything Fry is good. I am sure he will not disappoint.
Off to bed by 11pm. What a boring life I led!
Perhaps TV was my drug to avoid addressing some uncomfortable issues. Let’s see how the rest of the week goes,

Today proved switching on the TV is habit. Twice today I put my hand on the remote without thinking then reminded myself I am on an experiment so TV was not turned on.
Is just a thing I do without thinking when I am bored, lonely or tired.

I want to watch TV. I miss my prerecord repeats of Frasier.
Nope I won’t turn the TV on. I want to see how my experiment goes and what I learn from it.

I was determined to switch on the black box this evening. This was because I had a crap day and did not get enough sleep the night before.
I stopped and said to myself TV only gives me immediate pleasure it will not address underlying issues. I

The habit of watching TV every evening is easing. My earlier strong feeling to grab the remote and press the on button has reduced considerably.
There is so much more I do in the evening now. I am taking ACTION!
I have decided to cut TV completely out of my life. Life is just too short. They are far more important and helpful things to be done.
